Hamid Chabat, Mayor of Fez and Secretary General of Al Istiqlal Party, inaugurated the project of a slightly tall tower similar to Eiffel tower in France in one of the famous squares of the district of Zouagha, not too far from his home.
In addition, the mayor of Fez intends to build a gigantic arc like the ?Arc de Triomphe? (Arc of Triumph ) in France at the entrance to the city of Fez on the road to Meknes.
In a statement to the electronic news outlet, Chabat said that the height of ?Eiffel? Tower in the city of Fez will exceed 22 meters, while the height of the Fassi Arc de Triomphe that the mayor intended to build at the entrance of Fez will be 5 meters taller than Paris? Arc de Triomphe.
The people of Fez wonder why Chabat intends to build such a monument which was built by Napoleon Bonaparte for the French to remember the victories of their army in the Battle of Austerlitz, instead of renovating and restoring the historic and crumbling buildings in Fez that have a significant and a special place in the history of the Kingdom and in popular memory.
It is worth mentioning that Hamid Chabat has already promised the people of Fez to build an artificial sea in Fez in addition to his determination to set up huge projects that will challenge the famous landmarks in the global cities. This project has never come into being.
Hamid Chabat enjoys little sympathy from the Fassi middle class, who considers him one of the worst mayors in the city?s history. Many people from Fez point out that the projects Chabat boasts were built not because he was willing to do so, but thanks to the determination of King Mohammed VI to restore the most ancient city of the Kingdom to its erstwhile glory.
?Now that Chabat is thinking of building an Arc de Triomphe, why should not he think of building a replica of Mecca? This way, he would definitely leave his mark in history as being one of the most megalomaniac in the history of the city,? a high school teacher, who asked to speak in the condition of unanimity, sarcastically told Morocco World News.
