The Priciest Condos in Hollandale and Hollywood Florida

South Beach Condos For Sale

South Beach Miami Condos For Sale

The new Hallandale Condos and Hollywood Florida Condos

have reputations as luxury real estate markets and, they more than live up to that reputation. The prices of some condominiums reflect this market more than others do and, to illustrate that, here are the 10 highest prices for condominium resales that went through between April 2012 and June 2012.

According to data, the priciest condominiums were as follows. With the exception of 2 units, denoted by asterisks, they were all located in the Hollywood Beach area. The other sales were both in the Hallandale Beach area. The sales are listed from least to most expensive.

? Beach Club I Hallandale 3-bedroom unit for $900,000*
? Diplomat Residences 3-bedroom for $950,000
? Beach Club II Hallandale 3-bedroom for $955,000*
? Villas of Positano 2-bedroom for $1,000,000
? Ocean Palms 3-bedroom for $1,025,000
? Diplomat Ocean Residences 2-bedroom for $1,060,000
? Diplomat Oceanfront Residences 3-bedroom for $1,383,000
? Trump Hollywood 3-bedroom for $1,800,000
? Diplomat Oceanfront Residences 3-bedroom for $1,800,000
? Villas of Positano 3-bedroom for $2,035,000

The prices of these condominiums has actually gone down on the average compared to what they were originally listed for, but the prices are obviously still well into the luxury range and make them interesting to investors.

Despite the impressive prices for these properties, they were all offered at a discount compared to their original asking prices. The #1 spot, in fact, at Villas of Position came at an 18% discount compared to the original asking price. Even at the luxury end of the real estate spectrum?the most luxury end?it is still a buyer?s market in many regards.

Sales in the areas listed and for south Florida on the whole remain steady. While there is some nervousness in the market overall, the real estate market does seem to be well on its way to a recovery. In addition to these pricey condominiums, there have been quite a few investors making their ways back into Florida?s real estate market and they have been eager to acquire properties. A combination of international factors and low interest rates has contributed to this.

Luxury Properties in South Florida

Many of south Florida?s more desirable properties are luxury condominiums and this hasn?t been lost on investors. There are numerous projects in the works at present and, though some may have written off the south Florida real estate market only some years ago, it?s become an attractive place to invest?and live?again.

All of these prices came with discounts, which is important if you?re looking for a new home and you want to make sure you get a good deal. Even at this level of luxury, there is room to negotiate prices and prices may actually be reduced on their own compared to the original offer. If you?re in the market for luxury property, remember that the price you see advertised may well be subject to change with a bit of negotiation or with a bit more time on the market and that can make even very expensive condominiums attractive buys, indeed.

PFT: Garcon sees specialist, no timetable for return

New York Jets v New England PatriotsGetty Images

Jets backup quarterback Tim Tebow sat down for a one-on-one interview with Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, and one of the first things he mentioned was: ?We?ve had a history here of people talking too much. You just don?t want to do that.?

    Mission accomplished.

Tebow largely danced around the notion of his frustration at not playing a bigger role, taking the good teammate role while admitting he?d prefer to do more.

?I don?t know if that?s not being a team guy,? Tebow said. ?I think that I try to be open and honest in talking to the media. Obviously try to be honest. But sometimes you don?t have to talk about everything. We?ve had a history here of people talking too much. You just don?t want to do that. Why make it something if it?s not??

Tebow?s squeaky clean image keeps him from appearing bitter and divisive, while clearly wishing he could do more.

?Obviously, I?m a competitor,? he said. ?And you get frustrated with losing. When we win, I?m excited about winning. That way I get the ups and downs of a football season. But I also know that it?s never as good as it seems, it?s never as bad as seems. You always have to stay focused because you never know for me.

?My role, it could expand. So you just got to always be ready.?

Asked if it was fair to starter Mark Sanchez to have such a popular player as the backup, Tebow replied: ?I feel like one of the reasons they brought me here was to help make him better by being someone that could come in and convert some first downs, make some plays, do different things. So, hopefully our being together will benefit both of us.?

Mehta joked with Tebow about running for public office, and he probably should. Because his ability to take potentially controversial topics and make them innocuous is as impressive as anything he?s done on the field as a Jet.

Automobile Insurance Rates Can You Lower Them?with me ...

Auto insurance rates are prohibitive today. Several households really struggle to pay the automobile insurance bill each and every month. And auto insurance coverage rates vary all the time. So if automobile insurance coverage price is an concern for you, what can you do about it?

The car insurance market is a massive sector. It is also a extremely competitive 1, and vehicle insurance coverage rates vary over time as car insurance firms compete for organization. Auto insurance rates are frequently very fluid.

It is entirely possible to lower the expense of your auto insurance rates by altering your behaviour, and you can do this by possessing a better understanding of how the rates are assessed.

Vehicle insurance coverage rates are based on an assessment of risk. While insurance companies vary their rates to compete with other insurance coverage organizations, they also differ their rates based on their assessment of the risk posed by a distinct driver driving a particular auto. They do this because there is no point in buying company with low car insurance coverage rates and then insuring high risk drivers at these rates. This is a recipe for losing funds.

So, if you lower your threat, you lower your auto insurance. How do you

lower your threat? Well theres a number of techniques that your own driving and automobile behaviour can impact your automobile insurance rates.
    auto insurance quote
Have a appear at the vehicle you drive. Is it suitable for your present needs? If not then would it be worthwhile to think about a change?

Various vehicles attract different auto insurance rates. Sports automobiles, high powered cars and vehicles at better risk of theft attract larger rates. How lengthy have you had your automobile and would it be smart to feel about an additional one that would be less expensive to insure and more useful to you? auto insurance quote

Are you a protected driver? Do you stick to the speed limit? Are you at risk of other driving offences? Many individuals do not feel about some of the consequences of speeding tickets and driving offences till after they have observed their subsequent automobile insurance coverage bill.

Your threat profile is a direct outcome of your driving record. A clean driving record and you will be rewarded by less expensive rates. A poor driving record and you will be penalised, usually for quite a while.

Are you prepared to attend driver coaching courses? A lot of car insurance coverage organizations provide certain discounts for drivers who have attended a program. Why? Lower threat.

Are you prepared to drive less? Could you car pool or use public transport to get to function? Auto insurance firms look at the amount of driving their clients do when assessing their automobile insurance coverage rates. Why? Lower threat. Less miles driven equals much less risk. And youll save on other car charges also.
    automobile insurance
So if auto insurance expenses are an issue for you and your loved ones there are issues you can do. These are just a few of those things, there are a lot of more. Vehicle insurance coverage rates are not set in stone.

Adidas claims victory in "knitted" shoe row with Nike

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Adidas may be able to sell its Adizero Primeknit running shoe in Germany from next month after a court ruled a temporary injunction brought by rival Nike cannot be sustained.

Nike filed for the injunction last month, halting the sale and production of the Adidas product, arguing the shoe was a copy of its Flyknit sneaker, launched in February.

The court in Nuremberg, Germany, on Wednesday said that after hearing the Adidas case, it intended to set the injunction aside on Nov, 7.

The uppers of the green Flyknit shoe and the red and white Primeknit shoe are both made from one piece of fused yarn, with both shoes looking as though they have been knitted.

Adidas launched its shoe at the London Olympics in July with a limited run of 2,012 pairs costing 220 pounds ($350) apiece. It has said it wants to use the technology for other categories of sneaker.

Adidas said on Wednesday it had filed for cancellation of the Nike patent, arguing the technology involved in making the shoe's upper from fused yarn has been around since the 1940s.

"Adidas vigorously denies the alleged patent infringement," it said in a statement.

Nike, which had been seeking to make the injunction permanent, said the latest statement from the court was just one step in a longer process.

"We will continue to aggressively protect our intellectual property rights, including through the conclusion of this interim injunction proceeding as well as in a formal infringement case," a spokeswoman said.

Online Prostate Cancer Patient Tracking Database Launches ...

By Alan, on October 25th, 2012

    Stuart Holden (Cedars-Sinai Medical Center)

    Stuart Holden (Cedars-Sinai Medical Center)

An online database to help men track the progression of their prostate cancer started yesterday to help patients avoid complications from overtreatment. The new program is part of the National Proactive Surveillance Network, a joint project of the Prostate Cancer Foundation, Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore, and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

The database aims to enable men diagnosed with slow-growing forms of the disease to track their disease in a Web-based patient portal. Stuart Holden, director of the Cedars-Sinai prostate cancer center (pictured left), says ?as many as 50 percent of newly diagnosed prostate cancer patients have a form of the disease that is so slow-growing that it often does not pose a threat to the life or long term health of the patient.? In this situation, patients often chose immediate and aggressive treatment, says Holden, but this kind of treatment can lead to in complications such as impotence and incontinence, diminishing quality of life while not increasing the patient?s lifespan.

Many physicians are now recommending an alternative proactive surveillance option, where patients thought to have early-stage or slow-growing forms of the disease are closely monitored, which is the goal of the National Proactive Surveillance Network?s tracking database. Patients joining this network will have annual prostate biopsies, answer lifestyle and nutrition questionnaires, and record their medical histories. The database would track changes in their disease, allowing patients to decide if and when they need to change the course of their treatment.

This network?s organizers say it is the first comprehensive clinical data and tissue collection from a group of men with early-stage, low-volume prostate cancer. Data collected by the network will be kept anonymous, to protect patient privacy, while still allowing researchers to analyze trends as well as patient commonalities and differences.

Researchers will be able to examine and test the tissue to discover changes that indicate if patients have slow- or fast-growing forms of prostate cancer. Patient samples, including biopsy tissue, blood, and urine, also will be collected and analyzed at two locations ? Johns Hopkins Medicine on the east coast and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in the west ? and made available for future prostate cancer studies.

?This database will eventually give us a better way to predict which men benefit from treatment,? says Holden, ?and which men will not be harmed by choosing to defer treatment.?

5 ways Giants can surprise Tigers

San Francisco's rotation, bullpen and Bochy's savvy moves will play big roles

    Image: Tim Lincecum Reuters

If Tim Lincecum is used effectively as a reliever against the Tigers, it could be one of the things that swings the World Series in San Francisco's favor, writes Tony DeMarco.

    OPINION

    By Tony DeMarco

    NBCSports.com contributor

    updated 9:23 a.m. ET Oct. 24, 2012

    Tony DeMarco

SAN FRANCISCO - The favored Detroit Tigers are rested, their starting rotation is perfectly aligned, their lineup is filled with power, and their defense is playing better than projected.

But there is a set of events ? none of which are much of a stretch ? that could lead to the San Francisco Giants' second World Series title in three seasons. Five things that have to happen for a Giants' series win:

    Manager Bruce Bochy's wizardry continues
From his late-inning, mix-and-match bullpen mastery, to the delicate massaging of the bruised egos (and ERAs) of Tim Lincecum and Madison Bumgarner, to carefully easing the transitions of Brandon Belt and Brandon Crawford from young players to every-day regulars, Bochy arguably has done the best job of his 18 big-league seasons.

There also were the usual assortment of injuries, and the loss of Melky Cabrera, who was leading the NL in hits when he was suspended in late-July for performance-enhancing drug use. But nothing deterred Bochy's third pennant.

"Bochy has been unbelievable,'' pitcher Barry Zito said. "He gets a lot of credit, but I think he should get even more. What I always talk about is how he's handled the bullpen. For a team to go out there without a definite closer for most of the season, it's unreal what's been going on.

"It's much easier on a manager when you have a definite seventh, eighth and ninth-inning guys. Bochy didn't have that luxury.''

The Giants essentially have gone the entire season without their closer, as Brian Wilson pitched only two games in the first week before being lost to Tommy John surgery. No problem. Six different relievers earned saves, with Bochy funneling right-handers Santiago Casilla and Sergio Romo into the primary closer spot at different points of the season.

"It starts with the pitchers involved,'' Bochy said. "They have to buy into it. That's the only way it works. They have to say, 'I'm here to help the club win'.''

The left-handed side of the Giants' bullpen is as dominant as you'll see, with Javier Lopez, Jeremy Affeldt and Jose Mijares all capable of handling key left-handed hitters late in games.

And Bochy's lefties have a definite target in this series: left-handed hitter Prince Fielder. So look for Bochy to take the bat out of Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera's hands as much as possible, and sic his lefties on Fielder.

The Giants rotation, especially Zito and Madison Bumgarner, must step up
As dominant as the Tigers' rotation has been this postseason, matching it in this series won't be easy.

But the Giants can put together a series worth of quality efforts from their starters, then turn games over to the bullpen, where they have an edge.

Cy Young Award candidate Matt Cain pitched a perfect game and started the All-Star Game. Nobody in the Giants rotation currently is pitching better than Ryan Vogelsong, so much so that he is lined up for a potential Game 7 start.

And Zito's unexpected renaissance season at age 34 took off in the second half ? a 2.35 ERA in his last seven regular-season starts, plus an NLCS-turning Game 3 victory in St. Louis. It will be Zito's enviable task to face Tigers ace Justin Verlander in Game 1 on Wednesday.

"I couldn't be happier for him,'' Bochy said about Zito. "(How Zito has rebounded) says a lot about his mental toughness. For him to keep grinding, and trying to get better, I was proud to tell him that (he's starting Game 1). WIth all he's been through, and how he's handled it.''

Added Zito: "The circumstances swirling around shouldn't be a factor. It's my job to focus in on what matters.''

After being skipped over in the NLCS, Bumgarner will go back into the rotation for Game 2, in front of Vogelsong and Cain. The Giants feel pitching coach Dave Righetti has helped Bumgarner iron out some mechanical issues that had limited velocity and movement.

"He's had a nice break, which we wanted to give him,'' Bochy said. "He got off his good mechanics a little bit.''

    Tim Lincecum, stealth reliever?
As much as the Giants feel Bumgarner has worked through mechanical issues, the other side of this decision is Lincecum's versatility and potential affect on multiple games out of the bullpen, rather than as a starter.

You can't do this during the regular season. Not with Lincecum making $20 million per year. But at this point in time, it's the way to go.

No, his fastball velocity hasn't jumped back up to 94-95 mph. It's more like 90-92. His season ERA was 5.17, and he didn't get through five innings of his NLCS start.

But he's fearless, and only needs about 15 pitches to get loose. He's resilient enough to pitch back-to-back days, and he can face one hitter, or throw multiple innings.

"He gives us another weapon out there (in the pen),'' Bochy said. "I think that's the best way to go right now.''

And best of all, Lincecum says he has made the mental transition from starter to reliever.

"I went into (the post-season) open-minded, with the thought of being positive either way,'' he said. "I'm pretty comfortable in both, to be honest. It's up to (Bochy).''

    Score just enough to win
The Giants have made a habit of that all season, and their offense has picked up markedly in the second half, when not coincidentally, Marco Scutaro and Hunter Pence were added through trades.

Fittingly, those two were pivotal in the NLCS, which Scutaro dominated as MVP with a 14-or-28 stretch at the plate and several outstanding defensive plays. And Pence's freakish, spinning RBI single on a broken-bat soft-liner that eluded shortstop Pete Kozma helped break open a decisive five-run fifth in Game 7 on Monday.

This even could be one of those series where the Tigers win a blowout or two when their bats explode, but the Giants could scratch out four wins despite being outscored in the series.

When all else fails for the Giants, just get into an elimination game
The Giants have won six of those in their last two series ? three over Cincinnati after trailing 0-2, and three over St. Louis after trailing 3-1.

"You think you've seen it all in this game, but there's always something else,'' Bochy said. "What these guys have done to get to this point ? it's right at the top for me. You're going against all odds in those two series.

"But it says a lot about the character of the club and how determined they were not to go home. Good things happen when you do that.''

A Career Guide for Working Professionals- Career ... - Business Ideas

There is the lack of engagement in workforce worldwide (?Only just over 35% of global workforce is highly engaged.?? -?Tower Watson Study)?and its impact on organizations trying to retain talent?(?Retention of talent is the second more troublesome area for employers in India, after talent sourcing? -?SHRM India).?This means that about 65% of people have career problems, and they generally tend to solve it by changing jobs (which is not a solution for every engagement issue). In the IT industry, sometimes it is not easy to show the value you provide to organization that justify the high salary you get, salaries have become so high (esp. for senior people); and this puts lots of people in vulnerable situation when companies fall back to cost-cutting. This points towards a need of advice and support to manage careers better so as to have a successful and happy career.

As a part of their complete strategy, companies offer coaching to their employees at some intervals. We have a plethora of individuals working into the field of professional coaching. Most of the coaches deal with enabling the individuals with a better understanding about the work-life balance, in-house relationship management, business etiquettes, et al. This has been one lucrative field for people interested in developing a business in this segment. A new entrant in this segment is Career Bloom.

Career Bloom offers career coaching to working professionals. Career Bloom offers professional coaching to all working professionals in the experience range of 5-10 years to build a career that maximizes their talent potential. Through their coaching, they help working professionals chart the course from ?what they are? to ?what they can be?. They help individuals discover their self and their goals, create career plans and milestones, and stay effective at workplace while they execute on their career plans. ?We work with individuals directly, or in the context of their workplace or school (if they are pursuing professional courses to augment their career),? adds Mrityunjay Kumar, Founder, Career Bloom.

?I moved back to India in Feb 2012, after working in US and China for 5 years in engineering leadership roles in SumTotal Systems and Microsoft Corp. I have been managing very diverse teams over last 7-8 years in multiple geographies (India, US, China), and while I got lot of happiness out of delivering world-class products, I derived more pleasure in helping engineers in my broader organization align their personal and career goals with company?s goal. I have seen so many careers of otherwise smart people go haywire, and I have also seen equally smart people reaching great heights when they have managed their career proactively (sometimes with my help). I believed that I could make a difference in people?s career by providing coaching and advice at the right time in their career journey. Career Bloom is an attempt to turn that belief into a business,? says Mrityunjay, sharing his entrepreneurial journey.

For the online service offerings, Career Bloom has tied up with industry professionals who offer their career advice as well as comments on resumes when there is need to scale. For face to face coaching, Mrityunjay is the primary career coach.

    Two services offered online are:

Ask a Career Question:? A confidential service where one can ask a career question in detail and experts provide suggestions and advice. These are shared only with the concerned person and the answers are not made available to others? reference as career issues tend to be context-sensitive and private.

Resume Review: Where you can submit your resume for review from experts. Only comments are offered (multiple rounds if needed) regarding the structure, tone, formatting, etc., and samples are shared if required, but Resumes are NOT written for the candidates.

When asked about his plans to generate a decent amount of revenue via Career Bloom, Mrityunjay said, ?One of the early feedback we received from our audience survey was that while everyone felt a need for such a service, almost everyone feels it is hard to show enough value that someone will pay for it! So my initial goal is to get enough people to try the service (while keeping our operational cost low) so that they can see value and remember us when they feel the need for career coaching. We are also actively targeting organizations and offer them customized team coaching services that tie to their retention and engagement goals, this we believe will be a more significant source of revenue for us than reaching individuals directly.?

When asked about the challenges that he currently faces, Mrityunjay accentuates more on the value addition that should happen to the customers and to strategize and present this as a business model, by saying, ?I think the biggest challenge we have is that people don?t see value in paying for career coaching services. Also, their need for career coaching is satisfied (so they think) by talking to their friends or colleagues. So we need to convert this need into a revenue-generation event, and our strategy is to get enough people to try our service so they can see the difference, and the value; this takes time. Another challenge is to scale a services business like ours which requires human intervention to deliver value. Our thinking there is to learn from consulting companies like McKinsey about scale by converting knowledge into teachable models and hiring smart people who learn quickly and deliver with quality. This will be our target for 2013.?

Over the next 3 months, they plan to go about testing their service with a small set of clients whom they can reach directly. They are also planning to develop their coaching services for organizations and test out with 1-2 clients. ?Next year will be all about applying the lessons learned over next 3 months and scale the business, and that is the point when we will look for funding to help us scale and also hire for some key roles,? adds Mrityunjay.

On a concluding note he shares insights from the experience he has gathered over a long period working in corporate environment at various levels, ?I have now worked in 3 biggest economies of the world (India, US, China), and I can confidently say that professionals and organizations have similar problems all over the world ? how to maximize the talent at their disposal and achieve results that they aspire for. In India, we have lots of talent that is not utilized fully because individual career goals are not aligned to organization goals, which result in disengaged employees, leading to loss of productivity and attrition issues. If individuals can be more proactive in their career management and be the CEO of their own career, they can have a significantly more successful and happy career.?

Family of Teenager Killed by Energy Drink Files Suit

? Fourteen-year-old Anais Fournier was at home watching a movie when she suffered a heart attack last December. Doctors put Anais in an induced coma to reduce her brain swelling, but to no avail. She lived for six more days and then her family made the heartbreaking decision to remove her from life support. According to the autopsy, the cause of death was caffeine toxicity from an ?energy drink.?

Family of Teenager Killed by Energy Drink Files Suit Anais had drunk two 24-oz. Monster Energy drinks in a 24-hour period, up to just hours before her death. Combined, the two drinks contained 480 milligrams of caffeine, the equivalent of almost 14 cans of cola. The FDA requires that soft drinks contain no more than 71.5 mg of caffeine per 12 oz drink. However, the caffeine content of so-called ?energy drinks? such as Red Bull, Rockstar and Monster Energy is not regulated by the FDA because it is considered a ?dietary supplement? and not a food and not subject to the FDA?s caffeine restrictions. These energy drinks also contain guarana and taurine, stimulants that contain caffeine or produce similar effects on the cardiac muscles.

The R. Rex Parris Law Firm of Lancaster, California filed suit on behalf of the family on October 17th against Monster Energy for failing to warn about the product?s dangers. The case was filed in the Superior Court of California for the County of Riverside, Case No. RIC 1215551, Wendy Crossland and Richard Fournier, as surviving parents of Anais Fournier v. Monster Beverage Corporation. Among other claims, the lawsuit alleges strict product liability, failure to warn and negligence in the design, sale and manufacturing of the product. ?These energy drinks contain highly dangerous levels of caffeine and can be extremely harmful, but these grave health dangers are not clearly marked on the cans,? said Alexander R. Wheeler, a lawyer at the R. Rex Parris Law Firm. ?Anais?s family wants to make sure another family doesn?t have to endure the same tragedy as they have.?

Wendy Crossland, Anais? mother, said: ?I was shocked to learn the FDA can regulate caffeine in a can of soda, but not these huge energy drinks. With their bright colors and names like Monster, Rockstar, and Full Throttle, these drinks are targeting teenagers with no oversight or accountability. These drinks are death traps for young, developing girls and boys, like my daughter, Anais. Nothing will replace the love and vitality of Anais. I just want Monster Energy to know their product can kill. I want Anais? life to send a loud and clear message to today?s youth that energy drinks can kill. I would like nothing more than to have these drinks regulated by the FDA and ban the sale to minors.?

In the eight years between 2004 and 2012, sales of energy drinks have gone up 240%, and the FDA has reported six deaths and 18 hospitalizations associated with Monster Energy drinks. A report issued last year by the U.S. Department of Health and Services cited ten times as many emergency room visits associated with energy drinks between 2004 and 2009, totaling more than 16,000 visits in 2008 alone, leading some states such as Virginia to ban the use of the drinks during student athletic events.

?Monster, with their targeted marketing practices and promotion of energy drinks to teenagers, put profits over the safety of America?s youth,? said Kevin I. Goldberg, of Goldberg, Finnegan, and Mester, in Silver Spring, Maryland, a lawyer also representing the family. ?Nothing can bring Anais back, but we can tell the world these energy drinks are harmful. Our hope is discovery in this case will shed light on Monster Corporation?s practices regarding what they do or do not tell the public and FDA about the safety of their products.? Attorney Goldberg will be appearing pro hac vice in the case, along with Baltimore attorneys Michael A. Brown, Joseph W. Hovermill and Michael E. Blumenfeld of Miles & Stockbridge, P.C.

Fourteen-year-old Anais passed away December 23, 2011. She was an organ donor and her last acts were to save the life of a 40-year-old woman through the gifts of her kidney and pancreas, and giving sight to the blind through donation of her corneas. She is survived by her parents, her twin brother, Dorian, and younger sister, Jade.

Mass. gov.: Fungus seen at meningitis-linked firm

BOSTON (AP) ? State officials said Tuesday they found unclean conditions including visible black specks of fungus in steroids and a leaking boiler near what was supposed to be a clean room at a pharmacy linked to a deadly outbreak of meningitis.

Gov. Deval Patrick said the state has moved to revoke the licenses of the New England Compounding Center and three pharmacists there. He also has ordered the state pharmacy board that oversees similar companies to conduct surprise inspections and take other steps to tighten oversight.

The first such unannounced inspection was done at a compounding pharmacy on Tuesday, state health department spokesman Alec Loftus said. He would not reveal the name of the facility and said results of the inspection were being reviewed.

State officials said a preliminary investigation found that the NECC shipped orders from the lots of steroid shots suspected in the meningitis outbreak before its own tests came back confirming the lots were sterile. In some cases, they said, drugs went out up to 11 days before test results came back.

Officials also said the company, in Framingham, just west of Boston, operated as a drug manufacturer by producing drugs for broader use, rather than filling out specific prescriptions for specific doctors, which is all its license allowed.

"Over the years and for a variety of reasons, some pharmacists have transformed from your neighborhood drugstore into large-scale manufacturers that sell products across state lines," Patrick said.

The outbreak of meningitis, an inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord, has sickened nearly 300 people, including 23 who died, in more than a dozen states. Each victim had received a steroid shot, mostly for back pain. Federal health officials matched the shots produced by the company to the outbreak after finding a deadly fungus in more than 50 unopened vials there but have not said how the shots were contaminated.

New state documents released this week detailed problems an outside firm hired to do an assessment found there years ago.

The state documents, obtained by The Associated Press under a public records request, say investigators in 2006 found inadequate contamination control and no written standard operating procedures for using equipment, among other problems. The problems were corrected that year, and a state inspection in May 2011 as the company prepared to update its facilities found no such issues.

In a letter sent Monday to a lawyer for NECC, the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce sought nearly 10 years of documents about safety and quality issues at the company. It indicated that as far back as 2002 and 2003 officials from the Food and Drug Administration and the state conducted joint probes of the company after receiving a report about a steroid shot. Those probes preceded a 2004 joint investigation of the center by the FDA and the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy.

In January 2006, based on several complaints, the company signed with state regulators a consent agreement in which it agreed to a full inspection of its drug compounding practices by investigators.

The company's encounters with regulators have been reported since the outbreak began, but state pharmacy board documents released Monday offer a new level of detail. They show the inspection by Illinois-based Pharmaceutical Systems Inc. found "significant gaps" in procedures and a lack of required documentation at the NECC facility.

NECC spokesman Andrew Paven said he hadn't seen the committee's letter but the company continues to cooperate with the ongoing investigation.

"NECC worked cooperatively with the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy to resolve to the Board's satisfaction any issues brought to the company's attention," he said by email.

(AP) ? Hurricane Sandy lashed precarious shantytowns, stranded travelers and downed power lines with heavy wind and rain Wednesday as it roared across Jamaica and then headed for an overnight landfall in eastern Cuba and go on to threaten the Bahamas and possibly Florida.

Sandy's death toll was at least two. An elderly man was killed in Jamaica when he was crushed by a boulder that rolled onto his clapboard house, police reported. Earlier Wednesday, a woman in Haiti was swept away by a rushing river she was trying to cross.

The storm hit Jamaica as a category 1 hurricane then strengthened as it spun over open sea toward Cuba. U.S. forecasters said it had maximum sustained winds of 90 mph (150 kph) late Wednesday and might grow into a category 2 storm before going ashore. It was moving north at about 13 mph (20 kph) and hurricane-force winds extended outward up to 30 miles (45 kilometers) from the center.

In some southern towns on Jamaica, a few crocodiles were caught in rushing floodwaters that carried them out of their homes in mangrove thickets, showing up in districts where electricity was knocked out, local residents reported. One big croc took up temporary residence in a family's front yard in the city of Portmore.

The hurricane's eye crossed over Jamaica by Wednesday evening and emerged from its northern coast near the town of Port Antonio, meteorologists said, but rain and winds continued to pound the Caribbean island into the night.

It was the first direct hit by the eye of a hurricane on Jamaica since Hurricane Gilbert 24 years ago, and fearful authorities closed the island's international airports and police ordered 48-hour curfews in major towns to keep people off the streets and deter looting. Cruise ships changed their itineraries to avoid the storm, which made landfall five miles (8 kilometers) east of the capital, Kingston.

Flash floods and mudslides were a threat for this debt-shackled tropical island of roughly 2.7 million inhabitants, which has a crumbling infrastructure and a number of sprawling shantytowns built on steep embankments and along gullies that sluice runoff water to the sea.

In the hilly community of Kintyre, on the outskirts of Kingston, Sharon Gayle and a few of her neighbors expected to completely lose the town's bridge over the Hope River, which washed away a section of the span just three weeks ago during a heavy downpour. The shell of a concrete home that collapsed into the river and killed two people several years ago still lies toppled on the sandy banks.

"I'm really nervous. We're trying not to show it in front of the children though," the mother of three said, huddling under a sopping white towel as she stared at the rising river.

The 18th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season was expected to pass over eastern Cuba early Thursday, missing the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, where pretrial hearings were being held for a suspect in the deadly 2000 attack on the destroyer USS Cole off Yemen.

Cuban authorities issued a hurricane warning for several provinces in the east, and the Bahamas posted a similar alert for its southeastern Ragged Islands and the central and northwestern Bahamas, where the storm was predicted to pass Thursday afternoon and Friday morning.

Forecasters at the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said tropical storm conditions were possible along the southeastern Florida coast, the Upper Keys and Florida Bay by Friday morning. A tropical storm watch was in effect for the area, the center said.

In southwestern Haiti, a woman died in the town of Camp Perrin after she was swept away by a river she was trying to cross, said Marie Alta Jean-Baptiste, head of the country's civil protection office. There were reports of extensive damage to Port Salut on Haiti's far-southwestern coast after a river burst its banks. Mayor Larock Pierre Clervert said a hotel was destroyed by flood waters.

Across Jamaica, the poor in slums and moneyed residents in gated communities hunkered down at home as powerful winds shrieked around buildings and sent sheets of rain sideways. Many homes were lit by candlelight and lanterns since tens of thousands of power utility customers were without electricity.

Stranded business travelers and a smattering of locals rode out the Category 1 hurricane in hotels clustered along a strip in Kingston's financial district. Some read prayer books or novels, while others watched movies or communicated with loved ones on computers.

Cris Hopkinson, a Toronto woman who was on a business trip, said she hoped to catch a flight off the island Friday once the stormy weather cleared.

"For now, I'm just hoping that the glass in the windows doesn't shatter from the winds," Hopkinson said in the dining room of the Courtleigh Hotel.

About a mile away in the rough neighborhood of Grants Pen, where shops have been ransacked in the past during storms, a number of young men ignored the curfew, riding on bicycles or walking in small groups in the steady rain.

Cecile Graham, a mother of two teenagers, said she was worried about the possibility of burglaries or looting at the small markets and shops that line the main road.

"I hope that all the police are out and we won't have the looting that has taken place before," she said.

Police slowly drove through drenched communities in the coastal capital with their cruisers' lights flashing. A senior police superintendent was shot in troubled West Kingston, but the circumstances were murky.

The storm was predicted to drop as much as 12 inches (25 centimeters) of rain, especially over central and eastern parts of Jamaica, the country's meteorological service said. Some isolated spots could see as much as 20 inches (50 centimeters), according to U.S. forecasters. Sea water washed over the streets of southern coastal towns like Port Royal, a depressed fishing village at the tip of a spit of land near Kingston's airport.

Airports in Kingston and Montego Bay shut down for the day and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. announced that its Allure of the Seas megaship would not stop at Jamaica's northern Falmouth terminal on Wednesday, remaining at sea instead. Other cruise lines also rerouted ships from port calls to Montego Bay and Ocho Rios.

Far out in the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Tony posed no threat to land. The storm had maximum sustained winds of about 50 mph (85 kph) and was moving east-northeast at 23 mph (37 kph). Its center was 935 miles (1,505 kilometers) west-southwest of the Azores.
