MANDALUYONG CITY,? METRO MANILA ? the Philippines recently hosted the first Asian Internet Congress, an event aimed at providing aspiring Internet businessmen insights on how to transform their online habits into profitable ventures.

The event brought in some of the world?s best Internet marketing gurus, including four Filipinos who have made their mark as millionaires.

The two-day event was nothing short of a success. there were at least a thousand seats allotted and nearly all of them were occupied.

Most of the attendees were Filipinos working for multinational firms that have their own Web presence. a few, however, were small-time Internet entrepreneurs who also want to learn the secrets of earning lots of money just by staying in front of their computers.

Among the foreign speakers were John Jonas, a self-styled outsourcing specialist who has earned over $1 million since he started his venture ago. He is known for the concept of a four-hour long work week doing networked outsourcing jobs.

There was also Jo Han Mok, a Singaporean who also made his millions by selling Web-based copywriting techniques. Interestingly enough, Jo gives away some of his ideas in one of his sites.

Filipino speakers included Lloyd Luna, who is also in the Internet marketing business, and Nix Nolledo, co-founder of the country?s most popular online forum, PinoyExchange.com.

I was able to attend a couple of the talks during the event, particularly that of Jaz Lai, a Singaporean who is an expert list builder and multi-level marketer, as well as Simon Leung, a former Google employee who is now making money as a consultant on adwords and search engine optimization techniques.

I also got to interview one of the Filipino speakers, Ian del Carmen, who is actually friends with most of the foreign speakes during the AIC. He said he met them also online when he started his Internet marketing business.

For the uninformed, Internet marketing is a platform for selling a broad range of products online. Like traditional marketing, it tries to get people on the Web to specific websites that contain the advertisements of specific products, and getting them to buy either direct or on the advertisers? shops. some Internet marketers can already use their own websites for selling products, much like a reseller.

There are also other ways to earn without selling products, one of which is ?pay-per-clicks?, wherein an advertiser or its distributor would pay the site a certain amount for every click of an ad.

Some of the techniques discussed by the speakers are being applied by hundreds of other Web marketing people, though their styles vary depending on target markets. What?s interesting is that many of the Web marketing techniques that they teach are also similar to traditional marketing strategies used for most products.

Of course, the similarities stop there as many are yet unfamiliar with such terms as search engine optimization, adwords, pay-per-clicks, geo-content and geo-targeting. other terms could also be confusing even for long-time Internet users.

Nevertheless, the speakers at the AIC unamimously agree that anyone with time, some Internet know-how, and the right information, can become like themselves.
