MIAMI (AFP) ? Tropical Storm Eugene gathered strength in the Pacific and could become a hurricane Monday, but it should remain far from the coasts of the Mexico, the National Hurricane Center said.
The fifth named storm of the May 15-November 30 Eastern Pacific hurricane season, Eugene was located about 405 miles (650 kilometers) south of Zihuatanejo, Mexico, according to the NHC.
It had maximum sustained winds of 65 miles (100 kilometers) per hour and was moving west-northwest at 10 miles (17 kilometers) per hour.
No coastal watches or warnings were in effect.
"Additional strengthening is forecast during the next couple of days, and Eugene could become a hurricane by tonight," the hurricane center said.
