No Shame Theatre Carrboro | Triangle Arts and Entertainment

No Shame Theatre

Typical theater performances are well planned out,
with actors, directors and designers planning, meeting and
rehearsing for weeks, maybe even months. No Shame Theatre is far
from typical theater. In fact, No Shame is about as unpredictable as
theater gets. No one knows what the show will bring each time. And
that?s the whole point.

No Shame Theatre Carrboro, a late night theater show, will have
its official opening March 24 at 10:00pm at The ArtsCenter in
Carrboro. At No Shame, writers and performers present short pieces
on the fly and the outcome is always unpredictable. There are only
three rules for writers and performers submitting a piece:

    1) it has to be original
    2) it has to be 5 minutes or less
    3) nothing and no one can be broken (not the law, the audience, the performers,
    the performance space?.)

No Shame is intended to be a forum for writers/performers who
have something to say and need a place to say it. ?It?s a way for
writers to get their work out there quickly and see how people react
to it,? says Jeri Lynn Schulke, Artistic Director of ArtsCenter
Stage which is hosting the monthly shows. ?Writers benefit from the
format the most because they can test drive whatever it is they?re
working on at the time. It?s a lot like our annual PlaySlam for
playwrights in that regard. And yet, it?s a forum that is open to
anyone?.?

Along with playwrights presenting new work, any given No Shame
performance may include magicians, poets, tap dancers, comedians,
musicians, storytellers, belly dancers, monologists, film makers,
singers, bands, comedy duos, performance artists and more.
Performances can come in a variety of forms, from poetry, dramatic
readings and performance art to music, stand-up, dance and film.
?Writers and performers may choose any topic they like. Pieces are
not screened ahead of time and no one is censors the pieces,?
explains Schulke. ?Anyone can sign up for a performance slot
starting a half an hour ahead of show time. All we ask is that the
pieces adhere to the three rules of No Shame.?

Writers and performers are encouraged to pre-cast their pieces
before the show with area actors. And yet, writers may fill roles
on the spot with available actors or willing audience-members right
up until show time. ?Half of the unpredictability of the show comes
from a seat-of-your-pants mentality. It?s more of an adventure,
more exciting to hand out your scripts the night of the show, put it
out there and see what happens,? says veteran No Shame performer,
Brad Schnurr. ?I?m not sure there is such a thing as a normal night
at a No Shame show. It?s said that being at No Shame is kind of
like watching an armored car and a truck full of lollipops crash
into each other. You?re horrified, but you?re also hopeful that
something wonderful is going to drop into your lap?

Schnurr was there at the first No Shame back in the fall of
1986. The first No Shame production had no performance venue and was
presented in the back of a pick-up truck in a University of Iowa
theater department parking lot. Playwrights Jeff Goode, Todd
Ristau, and Stan Ruth organized the first event. Goode and Ristau
published a handbook, How to No Shame, explaining the steps of
starting No Shame. As a result, No Shame spread across the country
and branches popped up from New York to Los Angeles, and from
Fairbanks to Miami and everywhere in between. There are currently
No Shames in Asheville, Athens GA, Austin, Chicago, Columbus GA,
Eugene OR, Holyoke, Lynchburg, Nashville, Roanoke, and now Carrboro
NC!

Anyone interested in participating or attending the show is
welcome.
