Lymph nodes can provide a suitable home for a variety of cells and tissues from other organs, suggesting that a cell-based alternative to whole organ transplantation might one day be feasible, according to researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and its McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine. In a report recently published online in Nature Biotechnology, the research team showed for the first time that liver cells, thymus tissue and insulin-producing pancreatic islet cells, in an animal model, can thrive in lymph nodes despite being displaced from their natural sites.
Hepatitis virus infection, alcoholic cirrhosis and other diseases can cause so much damage that liver transplantation is the only way to save the patient, noted senior investigator Eric Lagasse, Pharm. D., Ph.D., associate professor, Department of Pathology, Pitt School of Medicine. Children with DiGeorge syndrome lack functional thymus glands to produce essential immune cells, and diabetes can be cured with a pancreas transplant.
"However, the scarcity of donor organs means many people will not survive the wait for transplantation," said Dr. Lagasse, whose lab is at the McGowan Institute. "Cell therapies are being explored, but introducing cells into tissue already ravaged by disease decreases the likelihood of successful engraftment and restoration of function."
In the study, his team tested the possibility of using lymph nodes, which are abundant throughout the body and have a rich blood supply, as a new home for cells from other organs in what is called an "ectopic" transplant.
They injected healthy liver cells from a genetically-identical donor animal into lymph nodes of mice at various locations. The result was an enlarged, liver-like node that functioned akin to the liver; in fact, a single hepatized lymph node rescued mice that were in danger of dying from a lethal metabolic liver disease. Likewise, thymus tissue transplanted into the lymph node of mice that lacked the organ generated functional immune systems, and pancreatic islet cell transplants restored normal blood sugar control in diabetic animals.
"Our goal is not necessarily to replace the entire liver, for example, but to provide sufficient cell mass to stabilize liver function and sustain the patient's life," Dr. Lagasse said. "That could buy time until a donor organ can be transplanted. Perhaps, in some cases, ectopic cell transplantation in the lymph node might allow the diseased organ to recover."

There are plenty of Bluetooth speaker?options out there?some are spectacular, while some are pretty uninspiring. The iLuv iSP245 Mo'Beats ($99.99 direct) sits somewhere in the middle, delivering sound quality that suffers from heavy distortion at max volume, which itself isn't all that loud. Its saving grace is its sleek design, which also functions as a stand to prop up pretty much any tablet in both landscape and portrait orientations. It's best to think of the Mo'Beats as a miniature TV or movie viewing setup than a dedicated music playback speaker.?
Design
The iLuv Mo'Beats resembles a skinny aluminum barrel, measuring about 1.75 inches in diameter and 9.31 inches in length, with a small lip on the front for propping devices up. At 1.09-pounds, the Mo'Beats is not quite as portable as options like the Logitech UE Mobile Boombox ?or the Jawbone Jambox , but its solid aluminum frame and stand function make up for the added weight.
There are circular speaker grilles at either end of the barrel, while a black plastic protrusion on the back houses the On/Off switch, 3.5mm Aux jack, mini USB port, and a slide-out stabilizing bar for heavier and taller devices. The recess in the lip is about half an inch wide, making it suitable for even overly thick tablets, while embedded rubber pads help keep devices in place. There are no volume or playback controls, as everything is handled on the device. There is also no speakerphone like on the UE Mobile Boombox or Jambox.
Pairing the speaker with a Bluetooth device is simple enough; just flip the switch from Off to On and select the Mo'Beats on your device. The Mo'Beats can only pair with one device at a time, which is less useful than the Mobile Boombox, which can pair with up to eight devices at a time.
Performance
To put it bluntly, the iLuv Mo'Beats is not the speaker you want if high-quality audio is your biggest concern. It's louder, clearer, and has better stereo separation than the built-in speakers on most tablets, but that's really not saying much. Compared with alternatives like the Logitech UE Mobile Boombox, the Mo'Beats sounds pretty tepid. Not only does it distort heavily at high volumes, the volume itself isn't even all that loud. Bass is seriously lacking, and songs with heavy bass, like the Knife's "Silent Shout," suffer from unbearably crunched and distorted sound.
On more balanced tracks that don't go overboard with bass, and at moderate volumes, the Mo'Beats does a decent job, but still ends up sounding a bit too thin and treble-heavy for my taste. The vocals and guitar strumming on a track like "Babel" by Mumford & Sons sound a bit too harsh, while the cymbal crashes of the drums overpower the mix. Playing the same track back on the UE Mobile Boombox reveals just how much warmth is lost with the Mo'Beats.
It's not a dock, but its stand makes it a good option for a desktop mini home theater. For movie watching purposes, the speakers on the Mo'Beats actually do a respectable job. That same treble-heavy sound makes voices sound loud and clear. A trailer for The Avengers sounded exciting, with easy-to-hear dialogue and loud explosions that really popped. At the end, however, the score highlights lower register string instruments and percussion that became crunched and distorted at high volumes. If money is no object, the JBL OnBeat Xtreme ($499.95 direct) delivers powerful and high-quality audio, and it can also dock iPads in both vertical and horizontal orientations.
The iLuv iSP245 Mo'Beats isn't the best speaker for audio enthusiasts?not by a long shot. What it does offer is a useful stand that can boost the volume of your tablet, and its speakers do a good job for dialogue and background sounds in movies. The Logitech UE Mobile Boombox is still the Bluetooth speaker you want to get in this price range, but for those looking for an all-in-one stand and speaker solution, the Mo'Beats is, at least, a slick and well-built option.

One of my favorite moments from my last few days in Bangladesh was meeting Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, the Founder and Chairman of BRAC. Forty years ago after the liberation war and in the face of a devastating cyclone that killed hundreds of thousands in Bangladesh, Abed ? a relatively wealthy professional who had studied in England ? founded BRAC, intending it to be solely an immediate relief effort. However, once he began this work, he realized development required a lifelong commitment ? and that he would be in it for the long haul. BRAC transformed over time from an emergency relief organization to one focused on rural and community development for the long-run.
Sir Abed was inspiring because he embodied some of the qualities I most admire in good leaders: he was self-critical, self-aware, honest about failures, hardworking, and humble.
Sir Abed was eloquent but soft-spoken, almost surprisingly so for the leader of such a large international development organization, illustrating the qualities of ?quiet leadership.? He was inspiring in his humility and down to earth nature, without a trace of arrogance in his demeanor. And perhaps most of all, he was open about the challenges BRAC has faced and continues to face over the years. An intern asked Sir Abed how he feels 40 years later, having built such a large and incredible organization. Did he feel proud of all he had achieved? His response was that BRAC still has a long ways to go in improving development in Bangladesh; their work is far from over. He was glad, certainly, to note BRAC?s progress ? but recognized how much more there is to do in Bangladesh. He was focused on the future, on improving the organization, on pushing to be better. He realized that BRAC could not afford complacency.
It is clear that this attitude of self-improvement, honesty, and humility permeates the organization from the highest leadership levels to the grassroots volunteers and field workers. BRAC considers itself a ?learning organization? because it constantly recognizes its mistakes and innovates solutions to improve its programs. In 1980, one of BRAC?s earliest employees, David Korten, identified BRAC?s strength as a learning organization, noting that BRAC has an ?unusual capacity for rapid learning through the constant identification, acknowledgement, and correction of its own errors.? In his book about BRAC, Ian Smillie writes that one of BRAC?s strengths is ?its acknowledgment of failure as part of the learning process.? As Smillie comments in Freedom from Want, BRAC was, even at the organization?s founding,
??Brutally honest about what had been achieved and about what they had learned. They also demonstrated a clear ability to roll with the punches, adapting to new circumstances and better understanding. The average aid recipient would shrink from the idea of describing so many setbacks to its primary donor. But this kind of report would be typical of the BRAC approach over time. The idea was not to prove that they had all the answers before they started, but to find out what worked and apply the lessons.
?A quick look at reports published by BRAC-RED, BRAC?s Research and Evaluation Division, reveals that the organization is not afraid to be honest and relentlessly self-critical, using data to precisely monitor and evaluate its programs. BRAC-RED?s reports never fail to point out the gaps in service delivery and suggestions for improvement, thus exemplifying the organization?s capacity to be honest, learn, and innovate. Even conversations with senior management reveal that HRLS is eager to hear criticisms of the program and fresh outside perspectives, rather than shying away from negative feedback. In addition, BRAC?s ?capacity to learn is supported by the proximity of senior management to the ground, which enables senior managers and field staff to communicate constantly about what is working (or otherwise).? New ideas and innovative solutions are welcomed at all levels of the organization, and the experiences of field staff eventually do work their way up the ladder to be implemented by BRAC. Although the organization is not perfect, the fact that staff take a critical perspective to their work is inspiring ? and is a hallmark of its success.
Meeting Sir Abed taught me several things: the value of humility, the power of ?quiet? leadership, and the importance of organizational learning, openness, and honesty. These principles have helped BRAC constantly innovate and never take its progress for granted, and I believe that these leadership qualities are essential for the next generation of leaders in social justice, human rights, and development efforts.

PHOENIX (AP) ? A man fatally shot himself in the head Friday on live national television at the end of a high-speed carjacking chase that began in Phoenix and ended about 90 minutes later within 80 miles of the California border.
Fox News was covering the chase that began about midday using a live helicopter shot from Phoenix affiliate KSAZ-TV. The man driving a copper-colored four-door sedan stopped, ran into the desert and placed a handgun to his head and fired.
The man was declared dead at the scene and hasn't yet been identified, according to Sgt. Tommy Thompson, a Phoenix police spokesman.
Fox News anchor Shepard Smith told viewers that the video was supposed to be on a 10-second delay so it could be cut off from airing if something went awry.
"We really messed up, and we're all very sorry," Smith said.
Fox apologized for showing the violence on air.
"We took every precaution to avoid any such live incident by putting the helicopter pictures on a five second delay," said Michael Clemente, executive vice president of news editorial. "Unfortunately, this mistake was the result of a severe human error and we apologize for what viewers ultimately saw on the screen."
More frequently than its rivals, Fox News Channel picks up car chases from its local affiliates and airs them live. It's gripping television, a live mystery with no clear resolution, and often provides a short-term ratings boost as viewers tune in to see how it ends. Critics say the chases themselves rarely rise to the level of national news. The Phoenix station was not airing the chase live when it ended.
Thompson said the man allegedly stole a car from a couple at gunpoint outside a Phoenix restaurant just before 11 a.m. MST.
Police officers located the vehicle and began a pursuit and the man fired several shots, Thompson said. He said the shots hit the police vehicle and the officers escaped injury.
The suspect headed west on Interstate 10, then pulled onto a dirt road that Thompson said was "70 to 80 miles east of the California line."
"He got out of the car and shot himself," Thompson said. "Efforts to revive him were not successful and he was dead at the scene. We don't have an ID yet."
Fox returned repeatedly to shots showing the car passing big-rig trucks that typically travel at about 70 mph as if they were standing still.
Police cars did not appear to be immediately behind the car during most of the chase.
Shepard Smith was narrating the video and clearly had his doubts about what was being shown from the moment the man stopped the car. "This scares me," he said.
"You wait for the end of these things and you worry about how they may end up," he said. "This makes me a little nervous, I got to tell you. A little nervous."
The video showed the man running erratically in a field before putting the gun to his head and firing. He fell to the ground.
Fox's picture quickly cut to Smith, who was shouting "get off, get off, get off, get off."
After the commercial break, Smith apologized repeatedly.
"That didn't belong on TV. We took every precaution we knew how to take to keep that from being on TV and I personally apologize to you that that happened," he said.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Sept. 26, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --?The rising green consciousness in Asia Pacific is generating demand for natural products, and the personal care active ingredients market has been cashing in, especially with synthetics coming under scrutiny for its lack of sustainability. Customers' growing awareness and affinity for natural ingredients, higher affordability, and environment consciousness is turning them toward premium natural personal care products.
New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (http://www.chemicals.frost.com), Strategic Analysis of Asia-Pacific Personal Care Active Ingredients Market, finds that the market earned revenues of US$116.6 million in 2011 and estimates this to reach US$176.4 million in 2017.
"Technological innovations are giving market participants a competitive edge by enhancing the ingredients' functionality," said Frost & Sullivan Senior Research Analyst Dr.Nandhini Rajagopal. "Following the success of the new ingredients, manufacturers are replacing traditional materials with innovative ingredients; for instance, light emollients are replacing some silicon products in final formulations."
The cosmetics industry is riding a crest due to the higher spending power of the people in the region. As the Asia Pacific is expected to be economically strong for the next few years, the demand for cosmetics, and thereby, active ingredients, is likely to be high.
Meanwhile, changing lifestyles and poor food habits are also altering strategies in the personal care active ingredient market. Premature aging due to lifestyle habits has created a new target group of 27-40 year olds for personal care products.
Apart from these shifting patterns, the biggest challenge faced by the active ingredient suppliers in the Asia Pacific is the smuggling and counterfeiting of ingredients. They are also significantly pegged back by competition from low-priced Chinese products.
As these illegal products evade import duty and sales tax, their suppliers can afford to price them competitively and still gain huge margins, placing enormous pressure on legitimate suppliers.
Countries need to design strict regulations and enforce adherence to eliminate the threat from counterfeit and smuggled personal care products. Further, suppliers could also establish local manufacturing facilities to mitigate the effects of this challenge.
"Strategic relationships between manufacturers will also help synergise their strengths and overcome individual weaknesses," noted Rajagopal. "While vertical integration of industries can result in higher margins, horizontal integrations are expected to expand the product line."
Such alliances have been useful to the majors operating in this segment, and could be replicated by other participants.

CivicNet may boost property values and redevelopment projects?Oh boy! I like money!by Tom LaPorte | June 17, 2002
i-Street MagazineEven though the city is still months away from awarding the CivicNet contracts, some leaders of the effort are already looking around the next curve on the information superhighway. CivicNet may change more than the speed of neighborhood data connections. It may have an impact on everything from property values to the alignment of suburbs.
CivicNet, of course, is the City of Chicago's strategy for bringing high-speed Internet connections to all the city's neighborhoods. By "bundling" demand across all government agencies, a single provider gets a big contract for voice
and data services. Fast connections are installed in schools, libraries and other government buildings. The result is a wired city.Scott Goldstein, [vice president for policy and planning for the Metropolitan Planning Council]...also suggested that CivicNet in the city's neighborhoods could hold a key to redevelopment of business districts. Many neighborhoods lost retail trade to regional shopping malls and Walmart-type discount stores. But if a CivicNet strategy results in high-speed connectivity in an older business district, there could be a return migration by businesses needing or wanting high-speed access. In the same way that businesses locate near concrete highways and sources of water, they now will have to consider proximity to a network hub as a factor in their choice of locations.
...
It then limped along for a little while (from March, 2004, with emphasis added):
Portions of the network could be built with local government fiber already deployed along roads and Chicago Transit Authority lines. Unfortunately, to the frustration of local business and civic leaders, the city has done very little with the project since its' conception in the late 1990s.and eventually vanished
Kinks in plan to wire city for speed; Economy, timing strand CivicNet.(News)without a trace.Byline: JULIE JOHNSSON
A city-sponsored proposal to lace Chicago with fiber optic lines from 138th to Howard streets is stalled and appears unlikely to be revived.
The telecommunications crash, politics and a city budget crunch have combined to mothball CivicNet, a project that was supposed to put broadband within reach of every business and home in Chicago.
...
There were no survivors, and no one was ever rude enough to mention above a whisper that Da Mare's Big Internet Plan had turned out to be mostly boondoggle, double-talk, and political moonshine.
Then, a few years later...
March, 2006. (emphasis added) ??[Ed Note: The "Midwest Business" publication from which this quote was taken in 2009 has ceased to exist]
"After serving the post of Chicago CIO for six years, Chris O?Brien felt it was his time to move on. Hardik Bhatt, who officially succeeded O?Brien on March 13, said in an interview with ePrairie that he sees a fully Wi-Fied Windy City in 2007.?We don?t have to be the first city,? Bhatt said about the vision of Chicagoans being able to walk a laptop from Starbucks to their laundromat and to their home without disconnecting from the high-speed Web. ?We just have to get there. I see the city being fully interconnected sometime next year.?
June, 2006
Chicago Takes Bids for Citywide Wi-Fi Service
In an effort to bridge the ?digital divide,? the City of Chicago is moving forward with plans to offer Internet access to all residents. On May 30, Mayor Richard Daley announced a request for proposals from vendors competing for a 10-year contract to provide wireless Internet access throughout the city.Wi-Fi - short for Wireless Fidelity - enables mobile communications devices, like laptops and personal digital assistants (PDAs), to connect to the Internet without the use of any wires or cables. A citywide wi-fi system would allow residents to have online access from virtually anywhere in the city.
June, 2007 (Video from the "City That NetWorks" summit, at which the Dukes and Duchesses of the Great City wished real hard and clapped reeeeeal loud, so that Broadband Tinklerbell would live again! I do believe in fairies!! I do! I do!)
However, Eight Weeks Later...
Chicago scraps plans for citywide Wi-FiSo how could someone go from promising the world to delivering nothing and still keep their job?
Officials say it's too costly and too few residents would use itCHICAGO - An ambitious plan to blanket the city with wireless broadband Internet will be shelved because it is too costly and too few residents would use it, Chicago officials said Tuesday.
"We realized ? after much consideration ? that we needed to reevaluate our approach to provide universal and affordable access to high speed Internet as part of the city's broader digital inclusion efforts," Chicago's chief information officer, Hardik Bhatt, said in a statement.
...
One might speculate that very, very lavish flattery might have helped:
?[Ed Note: The "Midwest Business" publication from which this quote was taken in 2009 has ceased to exist]
...
In working with Daley, Bhatt asserts that the mayor bleeds technology. He added: 'In a 15-minute meeting, he always gives me five or 10 points I didn't even think about. He understands very quickly and gives me a good direction. He's on top of a list of all the visionaries I've worked with at Oracle and anywhere.'
Yay! Money! And so forth!
Mayor Richard M. Daley today announced new initiatives to help close the ?digital divide? in Chicago neighborhoods, guided by a city-commissioned study that says that 25 per cent of Chicagoans are completely offline and that another 15 percent have limited internet access.?The study tells us that the magnitude of the digital divide separating low-income Chicago neighborhoods is comparable to the rural-urban divide in broadband use,? Daley said in a news conference held at The Resurrection Project, 1814 S. Paulina St.
?If we want to improve the quality of life for everyone, we must work to make sure that every resident and business has access to 21st century technology in their own neighborhoods and homes,? the Mayor said.
...
Which brings us pretty much up-to-date, except for one little-known fact: that Da Mare's people had a virtually identical proposal for a small, well-reasoned pilot program in their hands five years ago (Full disclosure; I am acquainted with some of the people who contributed to the proposal. They are, to put it mildly, a trifle cranky.) It was designed to do almost exactly what this latest plan is supposed to do: technologically uplift a specific, geographic region, then carefully test and measure the efficacy of providing near-universal high-speed internet access to that area.
It was summarily rejected not because of the price tag, but because it wasn't splashy and spectacular enough. Because it was wouldn't guarantee complete, wall-to-wall coverage of the entire city in one year and at virtually no cost.
In other words, because it didn't promise a big, steaming heap of technological magic and economic voodoo with political miracles sprinkled on top.
And because, as is all too often the case, Da Mare's people were far more interested in headline-generating gimmicks than in real solutions, in the end they went with the nice man who promised them they could have the city "fully interconnected sometime next year?, while the other other plan was sent off to rot on some forgotten library shelf.
Another of the great mysteries about this strange tale is the behavior of Da Mare's people at this critical juncture: that rather than being righteously indignant at being led down the primrose path by someone whose resume would indicate that they damn well should have known better, they instead very generously decided to let that nice man keep his new job and politely ignore the fact that the very lavish promise he made in order to secure that job was yet another cocktail of boondoggle, double-talk, and political moonshine.
Weird, isn't it?
Of course, all Chicagoans of good will should wish City Hall godspeed and good luck with this latest iteration of the Neverending Project, because:
Because the one, clear lesson lesson which can be drawn from the last 10 years is, sadly, pretty simple: If you want to get ahead in City Gummint, when Hizzoner has one of his Special Mayor Moments and suddenly announces that the City's grave financial and structural problems can be fixed by, say, selling all of its parking meters to corporate grifters...
...or blowing hundreds of millions of dollars to sponsor a three-week sports extravaganza seven years from now...
...or, WTF, maybe inducing city pigeons into pooping out 100,000 tiny ingots of gold...
...rather than being one of those annoying, dour, ?reality based? buzz-killers and pointing out that his visionary pigeon plan might not be 100% biologically viable, instead reach deeeep into the biggest sack of horseshit you can find and say, with absolute sincerity;
?You know, Mr. Mayor, I sincerely believe wit all my heart dat doze pigeons could shit 200,000 ingots of gold ? and piss liquid platinum ? if only da right person were to be, y'know, put in charge of managing your brilliant vision."On behalf of all da poor children.
"An' hardworkin' mudders.
"An' old people.
"Of da Great City of Chicago.
"Dat we all love so much."
When I wake up in the afternoon
Which it pleases me to do
Don't nobody bring me no bad news
'Cause I wake up already negative
And I've wired up my fuse
So don't nobody bring me no bad newsIf we're going to be buddies
Better bone up on the rules
'Cause don't nobody bring me no bad news
You can be my best of friends
As opposed to payin' dues
But don't nobody bring me no bad newsNo bad news
No bad news
Don't you ever bring me no bad news
'Cause I'll make you an offer, child
That you cannot refuse
So don't nobody bring me no bad newsWhen you're talking to me
Don't be cryin' the blues
'Cause don't nobody bring me no bad news
You can verbalize and vocalize
But just bring me the clues
But don't nobody bring me no bad newsBring some message in your head
Or in something you can't lose
But don't you ever bring me no bad news
If you're gonna bring me something
Bring me, something I can use
But don't you bring me no bad news

Internet marketing can be an extremely lucrative occupation if done correctly. Innumerable opportunities exist to launch online businesses, though every one of them requires significant time commitments. Since we all only have so much time, using it wisely is of the utmost importance. Continue reading to gain tips on managing your time while marketing your business.
In the eyes of your customer, their experience of your business website is akin to visiting a retail showroom. Take the time to frequently visit your website as a visitor and check for broken links, outdated information and other potential problems. Just like customers would not go into a store when they are unable to get in through the front, your online visitors won?t hang around until errors are fixed.
Include a choice of several specials on the order check-out page. For instance, a customer may add one of three specified products to the order at half-price as a ?thank-you? for their business. This is an excellent method of getting rid of surplus inventory and stimulating sales. At the same time, the customer feels as if he or she is getting a deal.
TIP! Use positive motivation to sell your product. Let people know how the products that they purchase from you will help them achieve their goals.
Great content is the basis of a strong, effective Internet marketing strategy. Make sure you edit your site often so you get the right information out to customers. Let others look at and critique your content as well. A fresh point of view is invaluable. Finally, you must be sure that you run a spelling and grammar check on your content to ensure everything is correct.
When using Internet marketing, use the word ?guarantee? in your ad. You do not want to make customers lose money if they do not like your product. Make sure the guarantee serves the product well by providing different guarantee types. Try using a lifetime guarantee or even one for 90 days. Tailor your guarantee to your product.
TIP! Another key to Internet marketing is your competition. Find out what steps they are taking and what is working and not working for them.
It is essential to know your target audience when you are trying to grow your Internet business. You cannot sell any baseball cards to a person that desires the vintage Star Wars toys. The main thing to keep in mind is that you cannot sell your product to someone who is looking for something else. Be sure to market according to what your niche is, unless you have two different niches.
Try and determine what your target audience would like to see whenever they view your website. Meeting (or even exceeding)their expectations will increase sales of your product. Ask for opinions that are objective on your website. Seek the critique of a trusted friend, or ask for comments on a relevant forum. Research properly, take notes, and create a site that really helps people.
Look for common issues among everyday people and target the niche. For what reason? Research some related website to find out the best methods for marketing your business. Trying to solve problems is a great way to build your reputation online, and complaints can help you zero in on the best problems to tackle. This is a good technique that will help you find your market?s niche. It may also help you figure out what your mission statement could be.
TIP! Getting your site listed by Google should be a key part of your Internet marketing strategy. There are a lot of folks looking at Google at all times; you should know when they are searching for something you have to offer.
When you link to another page on your site, use your keywords in the anchor text. Keeping people on your site is one of the most important things that a website owner can do, and you should link them to other relevant posts you may have made in the past. Relevant links keep the visitor from leaving and boost your website?s search engine rankings, which can lead to sales.
It should be obvious at this point that Internet marketing can be done in a time-efficient manner. Be wise about how you manage your time, and you should see results in no time

The 2013 Honda Insight provides a roomy interior, versatile hatchback design, fun-to-drive nature and an award-winning low cost of ownership. The Honda Insight received a 2012 Total Cost of Ownership Award from Kelley Blue Book?s kbb.com, with a key contributor being the 5-door Insight?s impressive city/highway/combined EPA fuel economy rating2of 41/44/42 mpg.
After extensive changes for 2012 including updated exterior styling, an enhanced interior, additional features on selected models, and an EPA fuel economy-ratingimprovement, the Insight continues unchanged for 2013. The 2013 Honda Insight remains the most affordable hybrid for sale in the U.S., and pricing is unchanged for 2013, starting at $18,500. The 2013 Insight goes on sale September 18.
The 2013 Insight is offered in three models. The value-oriented base model is simply designated as Insight, and is well equipped with a 160-watt audio system, automatic climate control, power windows, and more. The Insight LX adds a USB audio interface, cruise control, armrest console, floor mats, security system and steering-wheel mounted audio controls. The Insight EX adds alloy wheels, six-speaker audio system, heated side mirrors with integrated turn signals, Bluetooth HandsFreeLink, automatic headlights and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The Insight EX is also available with the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System with voice recognition and rearview camera.
Powertrain
A Honda Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system powers the Insight. Comprised of a 1.3-liter i?VTEC gasoline 4-cylinder engine and a 10-kilowatt electric motor, the combination develops 98 horsepower at 5800 rpm and 123 lb-ft. of torque at 1000-1700 rpm. To maximize fuel efficiency, friction-reducing measures are used throughout the engine and the transmission.
Fully automatic in operation, the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is an advanced unit that substitutes the gears found in more traditional transmissions and replaces them with a metal push-belt running between a pair of variable-width pulleys. Combined with the Drive-by-Wire throttle system, the CVT constantly adjusts to provide the most efficient drive ratio possible depending on torque load. Honda?s CVT provides better fuel efficiency and acceleration when compared to a conventional transmission. On EX models, the steering wheel includes paddle shifters, which allow manually shifting though a range of seven fixed ratios for a sporty driving experience.
The Insight comes equipped with fuel-efficiency enhancement technology called Eco Assist. A push of the dash-mounted ECON button modifies throttle control, CVT operation, idle-stop duration, air conditioning and cruise-control operation (if so equipped) to minimize energy use and increase fuel efficiency. A sophisticated feedback system uses ambient color behind the speedometer to indicate overall driving efficiency. An Eco Display provides feedback on braking and acceleration. Plus, Eco Score provides ongoing support of an efficient driving style.
Body
The Insight was given significant updates for the 2012 model year, including a more distinctive grille design with a blue accent bar representing the Insight?s high-tech hybrid identity. To improve aerodynamic performance, the strakes ahead of the front wheels were extended by 0.4 inches to better direct air around the front tires. The shape of the engine bay underbody cover was also fine-tuned, and air diffusers were added under the rear bumper to smooth airflow behind the vehicle. The changes combined to net a 2-percent increase in aerodynamic performance.
Chassis
The Insight rides on MacPherson strut front suspension, combined with a torsion-beam rear suspension that helps maximize interior space. Electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion power steering (EPS) offers predictable and linear steering feel, while also saving fuel compared to traditional hydraulic systems that put a greater load on the engine. With its 36.1-foot turning diameter, the Insight offers good maneuverability in congested urban settings. Insight and Insight LX models have 15-inch stamped-steel wheels with wheel covers and the Insight EX has 15-inch alloy wheels.
Interior
The Insight?s roomy interior offers comfortable seating for up to five passengers. Versatility is a key Insight strong point, and the 60/40 split rear seatbacks fold down to create a large 31.5 cubic-foot cargo space and make it easy to mix passengers and cargo.
Advanced instrumentation gives the Insight an upscale look, and provides the driver with key information at a glance. A large digital speed display is positioned high in the instrument cluster, close to the driver?s sightline and easy to see. The convenient Multi-Information Display (MID) allows quick access to a range of useful information with convenient steering-wheel mounted controls. Automatic climate control is standard on all grades. The Insight LX has premium seat fabric, while the Insight EX is upholstered with a combination of synthetic leather and premium fabric.
Available on Insight EX models, the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System with voice recognition4 includes a rearview camera and provides routing and guidance to individual addresses and more than 7-million points of interest within the continental United States. With its 16-GB memory system, it offers fast route calculation and includes FM traffic, a subscription-free service that alerts drivers to traffic conditions.
Safety
Standard safety features on all Insight models include dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags, front-side airbags with a passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS), side-curtain airbag system, anti-lock brakes with electronic brake distribution (EBD), driver?s and front-passenger?s active head restraints, and a front body structure designed to help mitigate pedestrian injuries. The Insight also features Honda?s Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure, which provides improved occupant protection and crash compatibility between vehicles of different sizes and ride heights in frontal crashes.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) named the Insight a ?2012 Top Safety Pick.? IIHS rates vehicles on performance in front and side crash tests, a rollover test, and evaluations of seat/head restraints for protection against neck injuries in rear impacts. To earn a 2012 Top Safety Pick rating, a vehicle must have good results (the highest possible) in all four Institute tests.
Manufacturing and Awards
The Insight is manufactured by Honda in Suzuka, Japan. Though the Insight features advanced hybrid technology, that doesn?t mean it takes a lot of money to buy or maintain one. The Honda Insight received a 2012 Total Cost of Ownership Award from Kelley Blue Book?s kbb.com. With its low starting price, excellent fuel mileage and exceptional Honda reliability, the Insight is a great value.
