Family. Food. Pets. Photography. Confetti? Hello, 2012!

New Year?s Eve was family day. It always is. And while we don?t do traditional stuff that are associated with superstitious beliefs, there are some traditional activities that we take part in. Like attending an annual reunion of Speedy?s clan (on his mother?s side) for lunch. While it?s always good to see the same old faces, it is even better to see new additions ? new spouses, new babies? every year, the clan grows.

After enjoying a home cooked buffet that included roast turkey, kare-kare, ham, laing, embutido and sinigang na ulo ng isda, there was a lot of chatting and catching up. A niece-in-law who was about eight when I first met her is now a lawyer and she brought her boyfriend to the reunion. Another niece-in-law who was about seven when I went to the annual reunion for the first time will be getting married next year. My, how time flies.

We passed by Tiendesitas on the way home where Sam and Alex got themselves some new lovable pets. Back home, we rested for a while until it was time to prepare the food for the evening meal. Per Sam?s request, we were having an all-grilled meal. I thawed a slab of pork and a tray of chicken thigh fillets. By six in the evening, I was slicing the chicken and pork. I marinated them in two different mixes then put them in the fridge. With the meat soaking up the flavors of the marinades, I started making dessert.

Tres leches cupcakes, per Alex?s request.

By 9.30 p.m., I started threading the pork and chicken on bamboo skewers. Meanwhile, Speedy fired up the grill.

The pork, marinated in a mixture of mayo, mustard, rosemary, lots of garlic and hot sauce, went on the grill first.

Then, the chicken which had been marinated in a mixture of fish sauce, lime juice, sugar, lemongrass and chili flakes.

New Year?s Eve dinner is served late in our house. Somewhere between ten and eleven. Then, we wait for the fireworks display. We always get a free show from our garden.

We had our meal in the garden. Before 11.00 o?clock, I was having my tres leches cupcake.

After the food and plates had been cleared, it was time to set up the cameras.

Sam brought out her equipment and started testing different settings.

I thought it was a good time to take photos of our new kitten whom Sam and Alex had named Bunny.

She?s a Persian. And she?s gorgeous.

Sam also got a pair of guinea pigs.

That?s the male inside the glass. I have lots of photos of the guinea pigs but I?ll post them later. They?re so cute when they?re eating veggies!

At midnight, fireworks lit up the skies. Sam took photos. I didn?t. I had very good fireworks photos from the previous New Year?s Eve. I was more interested in succeeding where I had failed last year ? take photos of confetti in mid-air.

I finally managed it.

That?s Alex holding Bunny.

And there?s the confetti in mid-air.

Finally. Success!

Wishing everyone a good and bountiful 2012.

Apple designer Jonathan Ive knighted

Duffy-Marie Arnoult / WireImage file

By Suzanne Choney

Jonathan Ive, the designer who has created Apple's most successful products in the last decade-plus, has been awarded a knighthood in his native Britain.

Ive, who designed the first iMac in 1998 that was "Bondi blue," then later available in a variety of candy colors, went on to design the iPod, iPhone and iPad. He is considered one of Apple's most important assets, a man whose design philosophy meshed pretty much perfectly with that of the company's late co-founder, Steve Jobs, who died in October.

In an interview with the BBC, Ive, 44, said the knighthood is "absolutely thrilling" and that he is "both humbled and sincerely grateful."

"I am keenly aware that I benefit from a wonderful tradition in the UK of designing and making," he said. ""I discovered at an early age that all I've ever wanted to do is design."

Ive was made Knight Commander of the British Empire; the honor is the second one for him by Britain, said the BBC: In 2005, he was made a a Commander of the British Empire.

Ive's title with Apple is senior vice president, industrial design. He has been with the company since 1996. Six of his Apple creations, including the original iPod, are part of the collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

In a recent story about the quite-private Ive, Donald Norman, co-founder of usability consulting firm Nielsen Norman Group said of the designer: "He just has a wonderful eye of making things that are simple and elegant. But he also understands that it has to be usable by people."

Video: Ready to kiss 2011 goodbye?

>>> after all we've been through this year, tomorrow night's big ball drop in new york's times square cannot come soon enough for a lot of people ready to kiss 2011 good-bye. nbc's mike taibbi tonight on why so many are saying good riddance and hoping for the best for 2012 .

>> reporter: let's face it. even if 2011 wasn't an actual bummer for most people it sure felt like it. from new york's times square .

>> it's scary. it really is scary.

>> reporter: to pasadena on the left coast .

>> feels like a lot of humanity has been lost.

>> reporter: granted there was a lot to worry about. pro football , pro basketball and even the u.s. congress were on the brink of shutting down. they didn't. and though california spent months over a transportation mess they dubbed carmegeddon it was just a news story about a highway shut down for a while. then there was oakland preacher harold camping who predicted the world would end may 21.

>> it will begin with a huge earthquake.

>> reporter: when it didn't he changed it to july 4 , then october 21 and then stopped talking. still, recent polls show americans by huge margins, 2 to 1 and 3 to 1, think we are on the wrong track as all the occupy protests demonstrated it's worries about money.

>> i lost a couple jobs because of the economy and things. everybody's going through that.

>> maybe congress will get it back together and do what it needs to do and go forward.

>> reporter: but 2012 is at hand and hope springs eternal . you may have heard we have an election coming up. so around half the country will find its hopes rewarded. the other half might find entertainment if not solace on events already on the calendar. the london olympics , the jubilee celebration for the queen's 60th year of rule, a tour and album by the beach boys . of course the movie " 2012 " does have the mayan calendar predicting the world's destruction next december.

>> california is going down.

>> reporter: but that's just hollywood. in real life , 2012 is already worthy of optimism because it's not 2011 . mike taibbi , nbc news, los angeles .
