Indonesia is ramping up security in preparation for a verdict in the terrorism trial of radical cleric Abu Bakar Ba'asyir.

Police chief Sutarman said more than 3,000 security personnel would secure the Jakarta court and surrounding area.

Ba'asyir, 72, is accused of helping to organise and fund a jihadi training camp in western Aceh province.

He denies involvement with the training camp but has repeatedly defended it as legal under Islam.

The cleric has been involved in radical Islamic groups in Indonesia for four decades.

Prosecutors have asked for a life sentence for Ba'asyir.

His spokesman, Hasyim Abdullah, said he was read to face "the heaviest punishment".

At the court

Supporters of Abu Bakar Ba'asyir have already arrived at the court house in South Jakarta, a few hours before the verdict on the 72-year-old preacher will be read out.

He needs no introduction to Indonesians - he is a familiar face here.

He is believed to be the spiritual influence behind radical Islamic groups in the country.

Mr Ba'asyir has maintained that he is just an Islamic cleric, and is not inciting acts of terror.

Mr Ba'asyir has faced terrorism charges before - in fact, this is the third time he has been on trial for his alleged participation in extremist activities.

Police detained him after the Bali bombings of 2002, but his conviction was overturned after he had served 26 months in jail.

This time prosecutors say Mr Ba'asyir is responsible for helping to raise funds for a jihadi training camp in Aceh, which was discovered last year.

Jakarta is on alert ahead of the verdict. A string of threatening SMS and Twitter messages have been circulating in Jakarta over the last few days. saying that any severe punishment for Mr Ba'asyir will have violent repercussions.

The police aren't taking any chances and have deployed 3,000 officers at the court, as well as stepping up security around police headquarters.

Whatever verdict Mr Bashir gets, they say they want to be prepared.

"He believes the verdict is deliberately designed to stop his dakwah [religious teachings]," said Mr Abdullah.

He was arrested by anti-terror police last August, months after the Aceh camp was raided by police.

The discovery of the camp has led to the arrests of more than 120 suspected terrorists over several months.

Experts believe the Aceh group was planning to form a militia to directly attack government targets and eventually impose an Islamic state.

Earlier in Ba'asyir's trial, prosecutor Andi Muhammad Taufik told the court that the cleric had helped raise money that would have been used for terrorism.

Ba'asyir has said the allegations against him were "engineered by America".

He was convicted of conspiracy over the 2002 Bali bomb attacks, in which more than 200 people died.

But he was freed in 2006 after his sentence was cut, and his conviction was eventually quashed on appeal.

Most analysts agree that he has been the spiritual leader of the military jihadi network Jemaah Islamiah for a number of years.

But he was cleared of involvement with the group after a trial in 2003.

Republican presidential debate: The GOP field is much less wacky than expected.

Mitt Romney and Ron Paul at the GOP debate on MondayJust a few weeks ago, Barack Obama's re-election bid was beginning to look like an easy downhill jog. The daring raid that the president ordered delivered Osama bin Laden to the bottom of the Indian Ocean. Economic prospects looked brighter. Perhaps most helpfully, the Republican Party seemed to be indulging some kind of collective death wish, putting Donald Trump first in the polls and Rep. Paul Ryan's budget-cutting at the top of its legislative agenda. The GOP's early presidential skirmishing took place in a land of conservative make-believe, where tax cuts grow on trees and President Obama can be described as any sort of alien?foreign-born, Muslim, collectivist?that one chooses.

Obama's spring peak came at the White House Correspondents' Dinner in late April, when he jovially deflated Trump, while the Navy Seals were en route to Abbottabad. But since then, the political weather has turned less favorable. Unemployment rose to a politically treacherous 9.1 percent, while the Dow fell nearly 1,000 points from its peak. The odds of a serious economic aftershock to the Great Recession have risen. Most alarming, the Republican Party appears gradually to be going sane.

The GOP presidential field, while hardly dominated by political giants, appears far less outlandish than one might have predicted. At the first Republican debate in New Hampshire on Monday night, the seven candidates competed not for evangelical or libertarian favor, but for the status of someone plausible to compete with the president for swing voters.

Here are some of the things that did not happen in the debate. No one called Obama a socialist. No one gave ambiguous encouragement to the "birther" faction. While all of the candidates oppose gay marriage, no one bashed homosexuals. With the exception of the marginal former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, no one directly endorsed the Ryan Plan. Two months ago, every Republican in the House backed this plan; now, no one wants to talk about it.

There were cringe-making moments, such as Herman Cain's assertion that sharia law is used in American courts, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich's seeming call for Muslim-Americans to swear loyalty oaths, and former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty's claim that America's founding documents describe it as a nation "under God" (neither the Declaration of Independence nor the Constitution uses this phrase). But overall, there was little of the usual thunder on the right. Gingrich has returned from the Greek cruise that prompted his staff to mutiny en masse perhaps excessively rested, wondering aloud about the absence of an American encampment on the moon. Even so, the Tea Party and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, touchstones for the populist right, seemed like phenomena from a past era.

It was former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney who held center stage, literally and metaphorically. As critics have alleged, Romney is something of a political weathervane. More precisely, he is a businessman, with an instinct for what product will sell at a given moment. Having evaluated the marketplace, he recognizes the demand for competence rather than ideology. Thus Romney now accuses Obama of failure, rather than leftism. He also does not repudiate his belief that human activity is causing climate change or his support for the legislation that his overhyped rival Pawlenty calls "Obamneycare." Instead Romney takes the coherent (if somewhat silly) federalist position that health-care reform ought to take place at the state level. Gingrich and Pawlenty, no more principled than Romney but with poorer political instincts, have simply boarded a train going in the wrong direction.

In the dynamic glimpsed last night, Romney is now running against Obama, while the other Republicans are running against Romney. The most credible challenge to the Republican front-runner is likely to come not from someone more conservative, but his coreligionist Jon Huntsman, the even more liberal former governor of Utah who is expected to announce his candidacy within the next week. Huntsman, who has in the past supported not only civil unions but Obama's stimulus spending, has expressed his intention to show "civility" not just toward his Republican rivals, but to the Democratic president he recently served as ambassador to China.

Primaries usually pull candidates to the margin, but the GOP is now experiencing a politically healthy course correction. Until recently the most evident forces were indeed pushing them away from the center. We are now seeing an opposite shift, away from then margin and toward the middle. For Obama, this movement, and the outbreak of Republican sanity it signals, is a worrying development indeed.

Many parents have worried that having a dog or cat may increase a baby?s chances of allergic reactions, but researchers at Henry Ford Hospital found that early exposure to pets may even decrease a child?s likelihood of allergies to pets.

The study involved a group of children from birth to adulthood, periodically collecting information about their lifelong exposure to dogs and cats. Researchers checked blood samples of 565 participants at age 18, measuring antibodies to dog and cat allergens.

It turned out that exposure to an animal in the first year of life was the most important period of exposure, and it appeared to offer protection to some of the study?s participants.

Among young men, those who had an indoor dog in their first year of life had about half the chance of becoming sensitized to dogs compared to those who didn?t live with a dog. When it came to cats, both males and females ended up about half as likely to be sensitized to cats if they had a cat in the first year of life.

?This research provides further evidence that experiences in the first year of life are associated with health status later in life, and that early life pet exposure does not put most children at risk of being sensitized to these animals later in life,? said lead researcher Ganesa Wegienka, MS, PhD.

The study was published in the journal Clinical & Experimental Allergy.

Springsteen Saxophonist Clarence Clemons Suffers Stroke

E Street Band favorite Clarence Clemons has is ailing. The iconic saxophonist, who has played alongside Bruce Springsteen for over 30 years, reportedly suffered a stroke while at his home in Florida.

Details on the 69-year-old's current condition are sparse but, according to Showbiz411.com, Clemons' medical situation in very serious. The musicians' bandmates were reportedly heading down to see their pal in a hurry.

In addition to being The Boss' right-hand man for years, Clemons recently joined Lady Gaga on stage at the American Idol finale. The big man is featured on new songs on Gaga's Born This Way album, including her newest hit, "Edge of Glory." Last week, Clemons was scheduled to play the national anthem before Game Two of the NBA Finals, but had to cancel last minute due to a hand injury.

iOS 5 developer beta: Real Racing 2 HD with iPad mirroring

The iOS 5 developer beta has been live for a few days now and I have had a chance to play around with some of the new features. This includes using tab browsing is Safari just as you would on OS X, also the new message features and gaming, although there are certain improvements each user will favor more.

First up in our test had to be iPad mirroring, which took a little while for us to learn how to mirror the iPad in iOS 5. We first looked at the settings menu but found no option for mirroring, after playing around for a couple of minutes it was found in the perfect place.

To turn on mirroring you only need to double click the button on the front of the iPad 2, which is where you see what apps are open in the background. Then scroll left and you will see the well-known video icon for sending video to Apple TV. Click this and select the Apple TV to mirror your iPad.

Once you select this option everything shown on the iPad will also show on your Apple TV, although in our test we had to connect the Apple TV directly to a Mac and install iOS 5 beta on the Apple TV. So remember when iOS 5 is released later this year to update iTunes and all your devices to the latest iOS.

Browsing web pages is good for everyone else in the room to see what you?re viewing, but it felt uncomfortable trying to select areas of a webpage without looking at the iPad. It?s pretty cool to type on the keyboard while looking at a bigger screen, and watching videos that expand the TV screen to full width is a nice touch.

My test was run on a 55-inch LED Samsung TV and while the screen was massive, having the screen more square like the iPad was not fun. Apple need to add an option for the screen to resize to the same as a 16:9 HDTV, although an option in apps designed for iOS 5 cannot be ruled out in the future. We tried changing options in the TV?s display but this does not work.

The real fun came when playing games with iPad mirroring turned on. We tested our iPad 2 with games like Real Racing HD 2, N.O.V.A, and Infinity Blade. It was amazing to look at the big screen and let the iPad become the controller, Apple are ahead of Wii U here, and what?s better is most apps costs only a few dollars, and thousands are free. When you compare that to the prices on PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii, this is HDTV gaming on the cheap.

We experienced a little bit of lag every minute or so, but we feel this is due to our network setup. Some tweaking would likely fix this.

Holding the iPad 2 as a steering while playing Real Racing 2 HD was the most fun, it felt much better than wheel accessories and feels more realistic. If you love racing games and can get past the cost of an iPad 2 and Apple TV, bearing in mind it?s ability to replace multiply devices, then racing in this way is pretty amazing although gaming apps will need to add many more features designed for this type of gameplay in the future.
