(AP) ? Chris Ault raised Nevada football. After 28 years as coach, he felt he had taken the Wolf Pack as far as he could.

Ault announced Friday he was stepping down, leaving as the winningest coach in school history, already a Hall of Famer, and having changed the way teams play offense nationwide.

Under Ault, the Wolf Pack went from Division II to I-AA to I-A, winning at every level with some of the most prolific and innovative offenses in the country.

The 66-year-old won 10 conference championships and took the Wolf Pack to the postseason 16 times, including 10 bowl games in 12 FBS seasons. He finished with a record of 233-109-1.

"It's with great humility and mixed emotions I've decided it's time for me to step down and move on," a tearful Ault said at a news conference. "Wolf Pack football firmly established a blueprint for success that can be sustained."

Perhaps his most famous contribution came late in his career, when he invented the Pistol offense in 2005, a scheme now employed by hundreds of teams at every level of football.

The Pistol formation has the quarterback in a short shot-gun formation with a running back lined up directly behind him.

"I'm proud that our offense has broadened the landscape of football. That's exciting," Ault said. "It's here to stay, unlike the wishbone (offense)."

He said he reached the decision to step down after consulting with his wife, Kathy, and Nevada President Marc Johnson. He informed his staff and players of the decision Friday morning.

Ault first broached the subject after Arizona rallied to defeat Nevada, 49-48, in the New Mexico Bowl on Dec. 15. The loss dropped Ault's bowl record to 2-8 and Nevada's season record to 7-6, including losses in five of its final six games.

With most of the Wolf Pack's offensive starters and entire defensive front returning next season, Ault said, the timing was right to turn the program over to a new coach.

"I have focused on leaving the program in the best shape." he said. "I'm sure it'll be a sought-after position."

While he has no plans to return as coach or athletic director at Nevada, he didn't rule out coaching elsewhere. Nevada athletic director Cary Groth is also retiring after this school year.

Ault agreed to a two-year contract extension last February that would have brought his salary to $535,000 by 2015. That's about half the average salary in the Mountain West Conference where he coached this season.

The overall budget of Nevada's football program also is far less than other major football programs, and ranks near the bottom of the Mountain West, Groth said.

Asked whether the limited revenue and loss of coaches were factors in his decision, Ault replied. "All of that plays into the decision ... I want to be a Top 25 program and we have that opportunity, but there are so many intangibles that I had to deal with."

Ault was the only active Division I coach in the College Football Hall of Fame. This season, he passed Bear Bryant for most wins by a coach at his alma mater.

His 40-year career with Nevada began when he played quarterback for the Wolf Pack from 1965-67. He became coach there in 1976 at the age of 29, then the youngest college coach in the nation.

His best season was in 2010 when he led his team to a 13-1 record and a win against Boston College in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl. The Wolf Pack, with Colin Kaepernick at quarterback, was ranked No. 13 after upsetting Boise State to win a Western Athletic Conference championship.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., issued a statement hailing Ault as "one of the greatest coaches in college football history."

"Year after year there may have been more highly recruited players in the NCAA, but Coach Ault created a team and taught his players to work together," Reid said. "This philosophy brought the program great success."

Groth, said she never "worked with a finer man" than Ault and would welcome his advice on his successor.

Johnson called Ault's decision "bittersweet." He said he was "really surprised" when Ault told him that he was retiring and he gave him more time to consider the decision.

Ault not only achieved success on the field, but off the field with a high graduation rate for his players and no NCCA problems, Johnson said.

Johnson said he and Groth would work together to find a new coach. A national search firm will be hired to come up with candidates, he said, and the Board of Regents will take final action.

"We want to be competitive, but Nevada isn't in the money game," Johnson said. "We're not a million-dollar-plus place for a coach."

George H.W. Bush moved out of intensive care

HOUSTON (AP) ? Former President George H.W. Bush's condition continued to improve Saturday, prompting doctors to move him out of intensive care, a spokesman said.

"President Bush's condition has improved, so he has been moved today from the intensive care unit to a regular patient room at The Methodist Hospital to continue his recovery," family spokesman Jim McGrath said Saturday. "The Bushes thank everyone for their prayers and good wishes."

Bush was hospitalized Nov. 23 for treatment of a bronchitis-related cough. He was moved to intensive care at the Houston hospital on Dec. 23 after he developed a fever.

On Friday, McGrath said Bush had improved since arriving in the ICU. He said he was alert and in good spirits and was even doing some singing.

McGrath said Saturday morning that future updates on Bush's condition would be made as warranted.

Bush, the 41st president, is the country's oldest living former president by a few months.

Physicists creates 'recipe book' for building new materials

Dec. 28, 2012 ? By showing that tiny particles injected into a liquid crystal medium adhere to existing mathematical theorems, physicists at the University of Colorado Boulder have opened the door for the creation of a host of new materials with properties that do not exist in nature.

The findings show that researchers can create a "recipe book" to build new materials of sorts using topology, a major mathematical field that describes the properties that do not change when an object is stretched, bent or otherwise "continuously deformed." Published online Dec. 23 in the journal Nature, the study also is the first to experimentally show that some of the most important topological theorems hold up in the real material world, said CU-Boulder physics department Assistant Professor Ivan Smalyukh, a study senior author.

The research could lead to upgrades in liquid crystal displays, like those used in laptops and television screens, to allow them to interact with light in new and different ways. One possibility is to create liquid crystal displays that are even more energy efficient, Smalyukh said, extending the battery life for the devices they're attached to.

The research was funded in part by Smalyukh's Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, which he received from President Barack Obama in 2010. And the research supports the goals laid out by the White House's Materials Genome Initiative, Smalyukh said, which seeks to deploy "new advanced materials at least twice as fast as possible today, at a fraction of the cost."

Smalyukh, postdoctoral researcher Bohdan Senyuk, and doctoral student Qingkun Liu set up the experiment by creating colloids -- solutions in which tiny particles are dispersed, but not dissolved, throughout a host medium. Colloids are common in everyday life and include substances such as milk, jelly, paint, smoke, fog and shaving cream.

For this study, the physicists created a colloid by injecting tiny particles into a liquid crystal -- a substance that behaves somewhat like a liquid and somewhat like a solid. The researchers injected differently shaped particles that represent fundamental building-block shapes in topology. That means each of the particles is distinct from the others and one cannot be turned into the other without cutting or gluing. Objects that look differently can still be considered the same in topology if one can be turned into the other by stretching or bending -- types of "continuous deformations."

In the field of topology, for example, an object shaped like a donut and an object shaped like a coffee cup are treated the same. That's because a donut shape can be "continuously deformed" into a coffee cup by indenting one side of the donut. But a donut-shaped object cannot be turned into a sphere or a cylinder because the hole in the donut would have to be eliminated by "gluing" the sides of the donut back together or by "cutting" the side of the donut.

Once injected into a liquid crystal, the particles behaved as predicted by topology. "Our study shows that interaction between particles and molecular alignment in liquid crystals follows the predictions of topological theorems, making it possible to use these theorems in designing new composite materials with unique properties that cannot be encountered in nature or synthesized by chemists," Smalyukh said. "These findings lay the groundwork for new applications in experimental studies of low-dimensional topology, with important potential ramifications for many branches of science and technology."

The study was co-authored by Sailing He of Zhejiang University in China; Randall Kamien and Tom Lubensky of the University of Pennsylvania, and Robert Kusner of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

Building Your Dream Home in Mexico ? Permits and Early Steps Part 2

Yesterday I offered a brief overview of some of the first key steps in the process of building a home in Mexico.? Today?s post offers a closer overview of an all-important topic ? permits.

Building a home in MexicoPermits

One of the most important early items will be the permits.? As one builder puts it, the only permit needed to proceed with building is a construction permit, which is granted by the municipality; however, there are permits needed to gain this permit, and others that could cause complications later on (such as fines or even putting the project on hold) if they are not in place.

Permits are not the same for each project.? For example, a home built next to the beach in places like Playa del Carmen will require several environmental permits from the federal and state governments.? (It must also be noted that there are plenty of lots in the Playa del Carmen real estate area that are within a short distance to the beach, but do not require any extra permits.)

In cases where a lot is wooded, there are permit to remove the vegetation. This can be avoided by buying a prepared lot; if someone chooses a ?raw? lot to save money, the will need to consider not only the cost of clearing, but also the cost of the permit to remove the vegetation and the time to gain this permit.? This item will need to be considered in markets like Tulum real estate, where much of the area is still jungle. Often agreements to leave a significant portion of the trees standing can make the process easier, and add value to the property.

There are also documents that prove that a property owner is indeed paying their workers, perhaps involving unions, depending on who is hired to do the work.? These documents will not be required to validate the building, but offer protection for the owner down the road.

Building a home in Mexico

Even the building permit itself will require several ?endorsements;? for example, it will need a stamp of approval from Hacienda, which is Mexico?s equivalent to the IRA, as well as the Health Department.

Again, an experienced professional will know best which permits are necessary and how to navigate through the process of obtaining them.? Property owners who decide to give it a go on their own should proceed carefully, taking all necessary time to do their homework before beginning any preparation or step of construction, talking to people who have built in the same community to ensure they have necessary permits and have covered their grounds.

Andy Welbourne, from London, Ontario, has been living in Playa del Carmen and working as a part of the team with Thomas Lloyd for 7 years. He has worked with many Canadians and Americans to assist in finding their dream home in the Mexican Caribbean; many of these clients have turned into great friendships. Senate approves $60.4 billion Superstorm Sandy aid bill

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate on Friday approved a $60.4 billion aid package to pay for reconstruction costs from Superstorm Sandy, which ravaged mid-Atlantic and northeastern states, after defeating Republican efforts to trim the bill's cost.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid urged the Republican-controlled House of Representatives to quickly take up the bill, which includes $12 billion to repair and strengthen the region's transportation system against future storms.

"There is no time to waste," Reid said.

Both chambers have to agreed on a package by January 2, when the current term of Congress is expected to end, or restart the process of crafting legislation in 2013. The Senate approved the bill 62-32, with most Republicans voting no.

"We beat back all of the crippling amendments," said Senator Charles Schumer, a Democrat from New York, which suffered the largest monetary damage in the storm.

"The century-old tradition of different parts of the country rallying to help those who are beleaguered because of difficult natural disasters continues," Schumer said.

The bill's chances in the next few days could depend on whether President Barack Obama and congressional leaders reach a deal to avert the "fiscal cliff" of tax increases and spending cuts set to begin taking effect in the new year.

House Republican leaders have not yet decided whether to take up the Senate bill, a Republican aide said.

The bill also provides $17 billion in Community Development Block Grants to help rebuild homes, schools, hospitals and other buildings destroyed by the late October storm, help small businesses and improve the power infrastructure.

Senate Republicans complained the $60.4 billion reconstruction package requested by Obama is more than the annual budgets for the departments of Interior, Labor, Treasury and Transportation combined.

HOUSE ACTION UNCLEAR

Senator Dan Coats, an Indiana Republican, offered an alternative that would have provided $23.8 billion in funding to help victims of the storm through the end of March and give Congress time to determine additional needs.

"Let me just say, we simply are allowing three months for the Congress of the United States, the representatives of the taxpayers' dollars, to assess, document and justify additional expenditures that go beyond emergency needs," Coats said just before his amendment was defeated.

House Appropriations Committee Chairman Harold Rogers, a Republican from Kentucky, would still prefer to pass a stop-gap bill to meet immediate needs and wait to do another package after better estimates come in, a committee aide said.

The Congressional Budget Office has estimated about $8.97 billion of the Senate bill would be spent in 2013, with another $12.66 billion spent in 2014 and $11.59 billion spent in 2015.

The Senate bill is considerably less than the $82 billion in aid requested by New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, the states that bore the brunt of damage from the storm.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, a Republican, was in Washington this month, lobbying lawmakers for the larger amount.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency's disaster relief fund now has less than $5 billion available.

The damage to New York and New Jersey coastal areas was on a scale not seen since Hurricane Katrina slammed the Gulf Coast and flooded New Orleans in 2005. Two weeks after that storm hit, Congress approved $62.3 billion in emergency appropriations.

Lawmakers passed numerous subsequent emergency funding requests over several years to cover damages from Katrina, which topped $100 billion. A number of Gulf State Republicans supported the Sandy relief bill.

Republicans were successful in requiring offsetting spending cuts for $3.4 billion in mitigation work to prevent future disasters. Some Democrats said this would set a precedent for future disaster aid bills.

Trainjacking America's Finance Industry | Planetizen

"I think it's very clear that transportation networks have vast impact on the structure of society, not just how people and goods get from Point A to Point B," says Renn. He acknowledges the success of Acela in closely linking Boston, New York, and Washington, but believes that the shrinking distance between Wall Street and K Street has been unhealthy for America. "During the financial crisis, the government and the Fed have kept Wall Street well supplied with bailouts and nearly free access to capital that allows them to literally print risk free profits by recycling in the free loans into interest bearing government debt," Renn explains, "all while Main St. businesses and homeowners have borne the full brunt of a credit crunch, state and local governments fiscally starve, and infrastructure funds dry up."

The geographic proximity of New York to Washington facilitates the imbalance of the finance industry while allowing insiders to obtain "a near lock on the position of Treasury Secretary" and letting figures responsible for financial meltdowns go free. "Indeed, advocates of high speed rail boast of the positive transformational effects of HSR as one of the reasons to build it. But was with the interstate highway system, we need to be aware of the hidden risks as well," cautions Renn. "The Acela is perhaps living proof that high speed rail can reshape America. It is literally helping rewrite the geographic power map of America. Unfortunately, at this point don't think that's been a good thing."

New Computer Bridges Classical and Quantum Computing

A new type of machine could rival quantum computers in exceeding the power of classical computers, researchers say.

Quantum computers rely on the bizarre properties of atoms and the other construction blocks of the universe. The world is a fuzzy place at its very smallest levels ? in this realm where quantum physics dominates, things can seemingly exist in two places at once or spin in opposite directions at the same time.

The new computers rely on "boson" particles, and resemble quantum computers, which differ from traditional computers in important ways. Normal computers represent data as ones and zeroes, binary digits known as bits that are expressed by flicking switch-like transistors on or off. Quantum computers, however, use quantum bits, or qubits (pronouced "cue-bits"), that can be on and off at the same time, a state known as "superposition."

This allows the machines to carry out two calculations simultaneously. Quantum physics permits such behavior because it allows for particles that can exist in two places at once or spin in opposite directions at the same time.

[Experiment Demonstrates Possibility of Quantum Internet]

In principle, quantum computers could solve certain problems much faster than can classical computers, because the quantum machines could run through every possible combination at once. A quantum computer with 300 qubits could run more calculations in an instant than there are atoms in the universe.

However, keeping qubits in superposition is challenging, and the problem grows more difficult as more qubits are involved. As such, building quantum computers that are more powerful than classical computers has proven very difficult.

Now, though, two independent teams of scientists have built a novel kind of device known as a boson-sampling computer. Described as a bridge between classical and quantum computers, these machines also make use of the bizarre nature of quantum physics. Although boson-sampling computers theoretically offer less power than quantum computers are capable of producing, the machines should still, in principle, out-perform classical computers in certain problems.

In addition, a boson-sampling computer does not require qubits. As such, "it's technologically far simpler to create than building a full-scale quantum computer," said researcher Matthew Broome, a quantum physicist at the University of Queensland in Australia.

Boson-sampling computers are actually a specialized kind of quantum computer (which is known more formally as a universal quantum computer).

"The main difference between boson-sampling computers and universal quantum computers is that boson-sampling quantum computers can't solve a universal set of problems like universal quantum computers can," Broome said. "But they are still conjectured to be able to solve problems that would be massively intractable for classical computers. Boson sampling computers are an intermediate model of a quantum computer."

Boson-sampling computers are not based on qubits, but on particles called bosons. "In our case, we use photons," said researcher Ian Walmsley, a quantum physicist at the University of Oxford in England. Photons are the packets of energy that make up light, and are one type of boson.

Broome and Walmsley were in separate groups that each devised a boson-sampling computer, based off concepts first described by theoretical computer scientist Scott Aaronson at MIT. The computers involve multiple devices that can each generate single photons. The photons are inserted into a network where they can interact with one another. They emerge from outputs equipped with sensors to analyze the particles.

The task of calculating which outputs these photons will emerge from, an operation known as boson sampling, grows well beyond the capabilities of classical computers the more photons are involved. The new computers accurately resolved what paths the photons would take ? three photons with Broome and his colleagues' machine and four in Walmsley and his collaborators' device.

Since boson-sampling computing is in its infancy, it remains uncertain whether these computers can solve problems beyond boson sampling. Still, this research suggests that computers based on quantum physics could indeed tackle problems beyond the reach of classical computers.

Previously, there was nothing to say "that anything you can do on a quantum computer you can't do on a normal computer, which leaves in question the necessity for quantum computers," Broome said. "Now, with boson sampling, we're coming up with machines based on quantum physics that can attack problems strongly believed to be intractable for classical computers."

In the future, "it would be great to push these computers toward more photons to tackle problems that would be challenging to simulate on normal computers," study coauthor Walmsley added. Using about 20 to 30 photons would be a problem?beyond the capabilities of classical computers.

Both research teams detailed their findings online Dec. 20 in the journal Science.

Texas town allows teachers to carry concealed guns

HARROLD, Texas (AP) ? In this tiny Texas town, children and their parents don't give much thought to safety at the community's lone school ? mostly because some of the teachers are carrying concealed weapons.

In remote Harrold, the nearest sheriff's office is 30 minutes away, and people tend to know ? and trust ? one another. So the school board voted to let teachers bring guns to school.

"We don't have money for a security guard, but this is a better solution," Superintendent David Thweatt said. "A shooter could take out a guard or officer with a visible, holstered weapon, but our teachers have master's degrees, are older and have had extensive training. And their guns are hidden. We can protect our children."

In the awful aftermath of last week's Connecticut elementary school shooting, lawmakers in a growing number of states ? including Oklahoma, Missouri, Minnesota, South Dakota and Oregon ? have said they will consider laws allowing teachers and school administrators to carry firearms at school.

Texas law bans guns in schools unless the school has given written authorization. Arizona and six other states have similar laws with exceptions for people who have licenses to carry concealed weapons.

Harrold's school board voted unanimously in 2007 to allow employees to carry weapons. After obtaining a state concealed-weapons permit, each employee who wants to carry a weapon must be approved by the board based on his or her personality and reaction to a crisis, Thweatt said.

Employees also must undergo training in crisis intervention and hostage situations. And they must use bullets that minimize the risk of ricochet, similar to those carried by air marshals on planes.

CaRae Reinisch, who lives in the nearby community of Elliott, said she took her children out of a larger school and enrolled them in Harrold two years ago, partly because she felt they would be safer in a building with armed teachers.

"I think it's a great idea for trained teachers to carry weapons," Reinish said. "But I hate that it has come to this."

The superintendent won't disclose how many of the school's 50 employees carry weapons, saying that revealing that number might jeopardize school security.

The school, about 150 miles northwest of Fort Worth near the Oklahoma border, has 103 students from kindergarten through 12th grade. Most of them rarely think about who is carrying a gun.

"This is the first time in a long time that I've thought about it," said Matt Templeton, the principal's 17-year-old son. "And that's because of what happened" in Connecticut.

Thweatt said other Texas schools allow teachers to carry weapons, but he would not reveal their locations, saying they are afraid of negative publicity.

The Texas Education Agency said it had not heard of any other schools with such a policy. And the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence did not know of any other districts nationwide that allow school employees to carry concealed handguns.

But that may change soon.

Oklahoma state Rep. Mark McCullough said he is working on a bill that would allow teachers and administrators to receive firearms training through the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training, which would authorize them to carry weapons at school and at school events. Other states are proposing or considering similar measures.

However, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder this week vetoed legislation that would have allowed concealed weapons in schools, churches and day care centers, saying he seeks a more "thoughtful review" that includes school emergency policies and mental health-related issues.

In Texas, guns have an honored place in the state's culture, and politicians often describe owning a gun as essential to being Texan. At the state Capitol, concealed handgun license holders are allowed to skip the metal detectors that scan visitors.

Gov. Rick Perry has indicated he would prefer to give gun owners the widest possible latitude. Just days after the Connecticut attack, Perry said permit holders should be able to carry concealed weapons in any public place.

Last year, many Texas lawmakers supported a plan to give college students and professors with concealed handgun licenses the right to carry guns on campus, but the measure failed.

Opponents insist that having more people armed at a school, especially teachers or administrators who aren't trained to deal with crime on a daily basis, could lead to more injuries and deaths. They point to an August shooting outside the Empire State Building, where police killed a laid-off clothing designer after he fatally shot his former colleague. Nine bystanders were wounded by police gunfire, ricochets and fragments.

"You are going to put teachers, people teaching 6-year-olds in a school, and expect them to respond to an active-shooter situation?" said Ladd Everitt, a spokesman for the Washington, D.C.-based Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, who called the idea of arming teachers "madness."

Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner said she would not have felt better if teachers at her children's Seattle school had been armed during a May shooting at a nearby cafe. A gunman killed four people at the cafe and another woman during a carjacking before killing himself. The school went on lockdown as a precaution.

"It would be highly concerning to me to know that guns were around my kids each and every day. ... Increasing our arms is not the answer," said Rowe-Finkbeiner, co-founder and CEO of MomsRising.org.

Dan Gross, president of the Brady Campaign, said focusing on arming teachers distracts from the "real things" that could help prevent a school shooting "and at worse it furthers a dangerous conversation that only talks about guns as protection without a discussion about the serious risks they present."

As the debate continues, Harrold's school plans to leave its policy unchanged.

"Nothing is 100 percent at all. ... But hope makes for a terrible plan, hoping that (a tragedy) won't happen," Thweatt said. "My question is: What have you done about it? How have you planned?"

Review: Sony Google TV NSZ-GS7

A few weeks back, I picked up a Sony NSZ-GS7 Google TV unit.? Here is the review!

NSZGS7 1

Sony?s entrant to the Google TV market is the NSZ-GS7 Internet Player with Google TV.? I recently had two first-generation Apple TV?s die on me (the power supply seems to have failed in both) and I wanted to try out Sony?s answer to the Google TV when replacing one of them.? The main draw to me was the prospect of integrating an improved channel guide and universal remote capabilities with my 6 year old Sony 60? TV and my DIRECTV receiver, as well as to open up some Android apps such as the IP camera viewer and Chrome.? Before we get into how this is working out in my home network, let?s see what Sony says about this product.

TV will never be the same.

What?s on TV? It?s completely up to you. Find what you?re craving with instant access to shows on live TV, streaming content, made-for-TV apps and Google Chrome?. Take control of your entertainment with an intuitive new remote that features a touchpad and backlit keyboard for easy operation. One box, unlimited entertainment.

And because it features a Flash Media Player, you can view Flash-based video sites for endless video content and engaging interactivity. Auto updates ensure added security.

And watch this video overview.

And now onto the review!

Hardware

The Sony Google TV is based on a Honeycomb build of Android, so this is running and ARM processor, similar to the Apple TV.? It is a small box that connects between your cable/satellite box and your TV or receiver.? This is nice as it does not take up an HDMI slot, and since it passes the receiver signal through the box, the receiver can operate with the Sony Google TV powered off.? There is a small power supply that hangs off of the back, and this unit supports Wi-Fi as well as ethernet connections.? I connected this device to my network via both Wi-Fi and ethernet, but left it connected to ethernet for general use as I had an extra port behind the TV.? It measures (W x H x D) : 8 x 1.3 x 5.1 in (204 x 35 x 130mm) and weighs about 1.3 pounds, very small.? It stacked on top of my DIRECTV receiver and looks right at home in my home entertainment center.

The remote is pretty confusing to use, and even though it is backlit, the buttons on the back side are hard to read in the dark.

Improve Energy Savings With A Whole-House View ? The Chronicle ...

geisel_header

As you know, the Cleveland area can get awfully cold during the winter. You can?t be blamed for blasting your heating system in an attempt to warm up. The good news is that you can give your heating system a break and improve energy savings around your home by following some of these tips:

  • Service your HVAC system ? Before the bitter cold months of winter hit northeast Ohio, have your heating system inspected by?an expert technician. Making sure it?s working properly and efficiently will help lower heating bills.
  • Insulation ??Insulating your home will help keep heat from leaking out or cold air from seeping in. Make sure to insulate your attic to keep rising warm air from escaping the areas of your home where it?s needed.
  • Plug air leaks ? Check areas such as the frames around your windows and doors, electric outlets and recessed lighting for possible air leaks. Seal leaks with caulk, spray foam or weatherstripping, depending on the situation.
  • Upgrade windows ? Do you have single-paned windows? If it?s practical, consider upgrading to double-paned windows to help prevent heat loss. In any event, use curtains and drapes as an extra layer of insulation during those cold winter nights.
  • Upgrade water heater ? How old is?your water heater? If it?s an older model, odds are it?s not very efficient. Upgrade to an Energy Star approved model to reduce the amount of energy used to heat your water.
  • Repair and insulate ductwork ? Have a professional contractor inspect your ductwork for air leaks and then repair them. Insulating your ducts will help prevent heat loss as well.
  • Use ceiling fans ? Use ceiling fans to complement your heating and cooling systems. You know how they help cooling in the summer, but in the winter, if the blades are switched to turn clockwise, they will help spread warm air more evenly through your home, allowing you to lower your thermostat by a few degrees.
  • Unplug appliances ? Not using that coffee maker or hairdryer? Simply turning them off may not keep them from absorbing a small amount power. Unplug appliances such as these when not in use. The same applies to cell-phone and camera chargers that aren?t currently charging anything.

For more information about how to improve energy savings in your Cleveland-area home, please contact us at?Geisel Heating, Air Conditioning & Plumbing.

Rockford Area Historical Society News & Update

Terry Konkle Photo by Cliff Hill

Terry Konkle ? President

As I mentioned in last week?s column, the Rockford Area Historical Society (RAHS) has produced a limited edition dated Christmas ornament to be sold as part of our fundraising efforts for our museum. The idea is to continue with a new ornament each year giving people an opportunity to collect them. This years? offering features a picture of the old museum which was opened in 1976. It was decided to limit the number made to two hundred and fifty for our initial effort. They have arrived and are on sale for $15.00 each. They can be purchased at Great Northern Trading Company or people can call 616-866-0530 or 616-485-4144 for more information.

One of my hobbies is collecting postcards of the Rockford and Grand Rapids area. I am going to use one of downtown Rockford in this column to lead into a ?Nugget of Rockford History? question. It shows Main Street looking north from the corner of Bridge Street. I am guessing the picture was taken in the 1940?s with many of the buildings still around today (December 2012). In most cases the structures are the same but the names on them are different.

All right readers, here are two questions. Question one: What business now occupies the building with the ?Jack?s Grill? sign on it? Question two: When the postcard was taken, what business name is on the sign just to the right of the Standard Oil sign (get out the magnifying glass if you want). If you can answer one or both, contact me at 616-866-0530. Responses will appear in the column just after Christmas.

The last ?Nugget of Rockford History? question concerning the two new Rockford Streets added because of a housing expansion brought not only several answers but also lots of interesting historical information. The streets were Adolph and Elizabeth which became part of the ?new addition?.

Bill Boyd was an early caller with not only a correct answer but a trip down memory lane as he rattled off the names of people who lived in the houses. Versa Stoner called to tell me that she and her husband Ken built their house on Elizabeth when there were few houses there in the early 1950?s. Others who knew one or both streets were Lois Jorgenson, Mary and Barry Bell, Joe Sharpe (my cousin), Sharon Berry, Nancy Simonis, Lee Paull, an anonymous (???) White Pine Trail dog walker, and Bob Boyer. It was great to talk with all of you.

In closing I want to especially thank the members of the Courtland township board for their support of our museum project and also for the warm welcome and response given to me and the historical society at their last meeting. What an impressive group of people!

Mammals are in for a stormy ride as cyclones and droughts caused by climate change could threaten populations

MAMMALS could be at a greater risk of extinction due to predicted increases in extreme weather conditions, states a paper published today by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL).

Scientists have mapped out land mammal populations, and overlapped this with information of where droughts and cyclones are most likely to occur. This allowed them to identify species at high risk of exposure to extreme weather. The paper, published this week in the journal Conservation Letters, describes the results of assessing almost six thousand species of land mammals in this way.

Lead author of the paper, ZSL's Eric Ameca y Jurez says: "Approximately a third of the species assessed have at least a quarter of their range exposed to cyclones, droughts or a combination of both. If these species are found to be highly susceptible to these conditions, it will lead to a substantial increase in the number of mammals classified as threatened by the IUCN under the category 'climate change and severe weather'."

In particular, primates - already among the most endangered mammals in the world - are highlighted as being especially at risk. Over 90 per cent of black howler monkey (Alouatta pigra) and Yucatan spider monkey (Ateles geoffroyi yucatanensis) known habitats have been damaged by cyclones in the past, and studies have documented ways they are able to adapt to the detrimental effects of these natural disasters.

In contrast, very little is known about the impacts of these climatic extremes on other species. In Madagascar, entire known distributions of the western woolly lemur (Avahi occidentalis) and the golden bamboo lemur (Hapalemur aureus) have been exposed to both cyclones and drought. These endangered species are also amongst the world's most evolutionary distinct, yet remain highly understudied.

ZSL's research fellow Dr Nathalie Pettorelli says: "This is the first study of its kind to look at which species are at risk from extreme climatic events. There are a number of factors which influence how an animal copes with exposure to natural disasters. It is essential we identify species at greatest risk so that we can better inform conservation management in the face of global environmental change."

How much would you pay for a real Halo Warthog?

Featured

The 'Nintendo Wii U' is a great device now, but it might not hold up over time. NBCNews.com's Todd Kenreck reviews the device. Play video

10 hrs.

If you've ever sat in bumper-to-bumper traffic and fantasized about simply?ramming your way past (or perhaps over)?the endless lineup of?cars inching its way along in?front of you, then?one Halo fan may just have the vehicle for you.

Peter Cooper, a writer, graphic novelist and?amateur?film director,?is selling a real?Warthog???as in,?the famed giant-wheeled, off-roading, battle-hardened rig favored by the super soldier known as Master Chief in the Halo games.

Cooper and a crew of fellow Halo fans in the UK?built the above pictured Warthog. Lead by?Daniel Carey-George of Planet Replicas, they created it?for?"Operation Chastity"?? the fan-made Halo?film Cooper directed.

Based on the?M12 LRV Warthog from the Halo games,?they spent a whole year working to get the?aesthetics down?before starting on the mechanical side,?Cooper told me in an email interview.?The vehicle?is now 100 percent drivable (if not 100 percent street legal).

"We took an old Land Rover Defender 110 that was due to be scrapped and removed everything but the chassis and engine," he said. "New wheels were put on, a steel frame constructed, and the body assembled using plywood and fiberglass to create the familiar Halo Warthog shape."

In fact, those of you interested in the nitty-gritty construction details, can read all about how this Warthog was created?on the "Operation Chastity" website right here.) And you can see it?in action in this fan documentary Cooper directed:

In addition to the movie shoot, the Warthog has also been used by Microsoft for "Halo 4"?publicity events and was used last month?in the live-action?"Experience Halo" event that took over Lichtenstein.

So why is Cooper selling every Halo fan's dream vehicle??Alas, keeping this sizable rig?around in the real world?has proved too costly.

"After years of looking after her it's reached the point where I can't afford the storage bills any more, and as such I need to pass the torch on to another Halo fan," Cooper told me after?announcing the Warthog sale via Twitter?last week.

His asking price:???17,500 (or?$28,000). And yes, he's willing to ship it over seas.

That may sound steep, but Cooper says he's already had some serious interest.?"One guy actually offered full price before being vetoed by his wife!" he said.

Cooper says he would like?to see his?Warthog go to a good Halo-loving home.

"What's important is that the new owner appreciates her for what she is???a real life Halo Warthog that is there to be enjoyed," he said. "Someone who would have a great time with it, someone who would savour it. A true Halo fan."

?And for that person, he might just be willing to cut a deal.

"For the right fan I would be willing to go lower on the price," he said. "I am completely open to offers at this stage???so long as you're not trying to steal her from me, we can talk."

If you're serious about buying your very own Warthog, send?Cooper a note?via?Twitter or email him at?troopercooper (at)?gmail.

Winda Benedetti?writes about video?games for NBC?News. You can follow her tweets about games and other things?on Twitter?here?@WindaBenedetti?and you can?follow her?on?Google+.?Meanwhile, be sure to check?out the?IN-GAME?FACEBOOK PAGE?to discuss the day's?gaming news and reviews.
