Leaked Rayman Legends for Wii U trailer showcases NFC feature (video)

If you're counting down the days till the Wii U is released, you might recall that back in January Nintendo chief Satoru Iwata said the console will ship with an NFC chip inside. Well, you can now get a taste of how games will incorporate that feature, thanks to this just-leaked trailer for Rayman Legends. According to the video, Rayman Rabbid action figures can jump into the game when a player taps them to the Wii U's screen. (It looks like that trick will work with an Assassin's Creed Ezio Auditore da Firenze figurine too.) Check out the trailer, courtesy of Gamekult, while you can -- after all, Ubisoft didn't want you to glimpse the U's magical powers just yet.

Amazon CFO Dodges Questions On Antitrust, Patents, Kindle Plans

amazon logoAmazon just wrapped up its earnings call for the first quarter fo the year, and the most common phrase may have been, "I probably can't help you." To be fair, earnings calls are always a dance, where analysts try to pry more financial details and future plans out of executives, while executives don't want to give anything away. But today's call felt like a particularly egregious example ? anytime anything interesting was asked, CFO Tom Szkutak would say he couldn't help, then maybe offer an extremely vague answer.

Young Rangers Fan Loses Foul Ball to Adults, Cries; Yankees Announcer Trashes Clueless Couple

There is currently no law that says you have to hand over a foul to a nearby toddler who was also reaching for it and cries as a result ... but come on, guys.

At the Rangers-Yankees game Wednesday night, a couple was so stoked to have caught one, they not only didn't give the thing up, they openly celebrated and preened for the cameras with the ball as the youngster bawled nearby:

This earned them a tongue-lashing from Yankee broadcaster Michael Kay, and landed the three-year-old and his parents on Good Morning America (above).

Luckily for our little buddy, the Rangers are giving him a ball signed by the ENTIRE TEAM. Class move by Texas and not a bad consolation prize for the kid.

Sean Leonard and Shannon Moore, on the other hand, have been castigated by the media - and wants an apology from Kay, who led the charge.

"Oh my God they can't give it to the kid? They're actually like rubbing it in the kid's face. Very cold," he said of the pair, which disputed this account.

They told a Dallas television station that they had no idea the young boy next to them was crying or even upset over missing out on the baseball.

Leonard and Moore say they were simply caught up in the moment during the game and would've given the toddler the ball if they'd seen him.

They want an apology from the Yankees' play-by-play man for his remarks about them. Think they deserve it? Or should they sell their ball and buy a clue?

Logitech president celebrates end-of-year earnings with management cull

Logitech's Q4 and full-year report makes for uncomfortable reading. Despite profits increasing by a factor of nine in the last quarter of the year, overall annual profit fell 44 percent from $143 million to $71 million. The company has already parachuted in former Whirlpool exec. Bracken P. Darrel to turn things around and recover the losses made when the company went big on Google TV. His first action has been to kick-start a restructuring operation that will save $80 million in costs, starting by cutting a whole management layer -- demoting current product VP Junien Labrousse and firing sales VP Werner Heid. Mr. Darrell is now working directly with his team on a new lineup of "stronger" products to be unveiled later this quarter, with an emphasis on Windows 8 peripherals and LifeSize video conferencing gear.

Ask AC: Taking screenshots on the Transformer Prime and HTC Vivid

Transformer Prime

Kinghthawk321 asks in the Android forums

OK, folks, one thing I really don't know how to do is snagging a screen shot, either on my Transformer Prime or my Vivid. I appreciate all help in bringing me up to speed on these techniques. Thank you, very much.

You're welcome, and we're glad you asked! Android is an open platform, which means manufacturers can implement things however they like -- including the ability to capture the screen. Of course, that means they all do it differently. Both the Transformer Prime and the HTC Vivid have the utility built in, and it's fairly easy.

On the Prime, just press and hold the multitasking button. After about a second and a half it will grab the screen and save it to the device internal storage. If yours isn't doing it, make sure this is turned on in the settings. Open the settings and choose ASUS customized setting and it is the second item in the list/

On the HTC Vivid, you press and hold the power button then tap the Home soft key. A screen capture will be saved to the device. This is pretty standard across all newer HTC phones.

Of course, there is the old fashioned way of using the Android SDK for screen capture. After installing the SDK, the USB driver for the device (if you're using Windows) and the Java JDK you can use the bundled ddms tool to capture the display. Thank goodness for the easy way, right?

Have a question you need answered? (Preferably about Android, but we're flexible.) Hit up our Contact Page to get in touch!

Chael Sonnen vs. Anderson Silva II moved to UFC 148 in Las Vegas

After logistical problems put UFC 147 in Rio de Janeiro in question, UFC president Dana White confirmed today Chael Sonnen's title rematch with UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva will be moved to UFC 148 in Las Vegas on July 7.

"I have good news and I have bad news. The good news is that Chael and Anderson will be fighting, but the bad news is that we can't do it here," White told a room full of reporters in Rio.

A United Nations convention causing logistical issues and difficulty finding a venue forced the change.

UFC 147, which will feature "The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil" finals as well as coaches Vitor Belfort and Wanderlei Silva facing off, still does not have a venue. The fights are still expected to take place on June 23 in Brazil.

White said Anderson Silva was not happy about the fight moving from his home country.

"He was upset about not fighting in Brazil. It took a lot of talking, and I finally convinced Anderson to take this fight in Las Vegas," White said.

Silva said that he does have fans all over the world, so he is comfortable fighting in Las Vegas.

"I'm a UFC athlete and I don't have fans just in Brazil but all over the world. Nothing will change. But I will do my job as always," Silva said.

Sonnen was disappointed that he wouldn't get a chance to break the UFC's attendance record of 55,000 set in Toronto at UFC 129.

"It was disappointing. I was hoping to be a part of breaking that record. But Las Vegas is the fight capital of the world and this is the biggest fight in the history of combat. My plan was to come here, take your money and my new belt and go back to America, but now I have to wait and stomp him on July 7. That's exactly what I'm going to do."

Adding Sonnen vs. Silva II as the main event at UFC 148 strengthens what was already a blockbuster card. At UFC 148, Urijah Faber will fight Dominick Cruz for the bantamweight belt, Rich Franklin will face Cung Le, Tito Ortiz and Forrest Griffin will fight for the third time, and Michael Bisping will fight Tim Boetsch.

NewsFlash uses high-frequency light to transmit data from iPad to smartphone, we go hands-on (video)

Image

MIT's Media Lab is chock-full of cutting-edge tech projects that researchers create, then often license to manufacturers and developers. One such project is called NewsFlash, and uses high-frequency red and green light to transmit data to the built-in camera on a receiving device -- in this case Samsung's Epic 4G. The concept is certainly familiar, and functions in much the same way as a QR code, generating flashing light that's invisible to the human eye instead of a cumbersome 2D square. In the Media Lab's implementation, an iPad is used to display a static news page with flashing colored bands at the top, representing just a few vertical pixels on the LCD.

As the device presents the standard touch experience you're already familiar with, it also broadcasts data that can be read by any camera, but flashes too quickly to be distracting or even noticeable to the naked eye. A NewsFlash app then interprets those flashes and displays a webpage as instructed -- either a mobile version with the same content, or a translation of foreign websites. As with most MediaLab projects, NewsFlash is simply a concept at this point, but it could one day make its way to your devices. Jump past the break to see it in action.

Jennifer Hudson to Testify in William Balfour Murder Case

Today will likely be one of the most difficult days of Jennifer Hudson's life

As we type, the Oscar winner is taking the stand to testify in the trial of William Balfour, the man accused of murdering her mother, brother and nephew in 2008.

Jennifer Hudson Grammy Pic

Balfour - who has pleaded not guilty - faces first degree murder charges. Prosecutors believe he flew into a rage and committed these heinous acts after seeing a gift to Julia Hudson, Balfour's ex-girlfriend and Jennifer's sibling, that he thought was from a new man in her life.

The trial got underway this morning.

UPDATE: Jennifer reportedly broke down on the stand twice during her testimony when talking about her family and looking at a photo of her mom. She also said no one approved of her sister marring Balfour.

"Where he was, I tried not to be. So if I saw him, I separated myself," she said on the stand.

Find A Shore Home l Consider buying two, smaller homes for ...

By: Ellen James Martin

Once, the notion of owning two homes was solely for the wealthy. But now more middle-class baby boomers entering retirement are ?trading down? from a big family house to two small abodes in separate states, according to real estate specialists.

?These aren?t rich people. ? Yet they have traditional pensions that give them enough income to support homes in two parts of the country,? says Margie Casey, a veteran real estate broker and author of ?Relocate at Retirement or Not??

In a typical scenario, a retiring couple will first sell their large family house. Then they?ll buy a smaller home nearby for use as their primary residence. Finally, they?ll purchase a small, secondary residence in another state, most often in a resort setting.

Wherever they choose to live, most boomers want low maintenance, with exterior upkeep provided through a condo or homeowners? association.

?People want the total freedom of ?lock and leave? homes,? Casey says.

Of course, many boomers lack the wherewithal to pursue a two-home retirement strategy, often due to financial setbacks in recent years. But Casey says those with enough money are willing to spend it in order to enhance their retirement lifestyle.

Here are a few tips for those considering a two-home retirement dream:

?First check out the financial implications of your plan.

Casey, who reviews retirement communities, says anyone considering two-home ownership should first discuss the financial implications with a professional adviser.

?A planner can help you calculate what you can afford and give you a second opinion on your plan,? she says.

On paper, it should be no more expensive to own two small units than a single large one. But in reality, dual homeownership can be more expensive after you take into account homeowner?s association fees and transportation costs.

Local taxes are also a big factor, especially in today?s tough times, where cash-strapped municipalities are frequently raising them.

?Once you investigate the taxes, you may decide to live one state away from your grandchildren, assuming that lowers your cost of living,? Casey says.

?Think through the choice of a condo as one of your two homes.

Michael R. Crowley, a real estate broker and past president of the National Association of Exclusive Buyer Agents, says homebuyers considering the purchase of a condo should exercise caution.

As an example, he tells of a married couple he advised on the purchase of retirement property in Hawaii. The couple chose a condominium development that seemed attractive. Before they concluded a purchase there, however, they rented a unit as a trial run.

?After a brief time renting, they realized they hated condo living. It felt way too crowded to them. They were glad they?d tried it out before actually buying,? Crowley recalls.

As he notes, there are other options for small-scale living that provide many of the worry-free features as a condo-apartment.

For instance, in many ?planned unit developments,? you can buy a one-level detached unit that comes with exterior maintenance, including a lawn service, Crowley notes.

?Consider transportation before deciding where to relocate.

Many a retiree has selected an idyllic retirement setting without taking into account airport access, which is a major mistake, Casey says.

Relying on an out-of-the-way airport makes it harder to travel to distant locations for vacation or to see your offspring. It can also add to your transportation bills.

?Try to live near an airport that?s a hub for one of the major carriers. That can save you a ton on air travel costs,? Casey says.

Another transportation factor to consider is proximity to major interstate roadways.

?Most retired people want to live within a two-hour drive of their grandchildren,? Casey says.

?Avoid high expectations for visits with your offspring.

?Living near the grandkids is the No. 1 thing for a lot of retirees,? Casey says.

Still, she cautions those choosing a retirement habitat to be realistic about their expectations on how often they?ll see family, no matter how close they live.

?Your kids have busy lives. Sure, you can hope to see them often. But don?t focus your whole retirement lifestyle on seeing family. First and foremost, choose the lifestyle that works for you,? Casey says.

?Remember the benefits of two-home living.

One reason retirees like owning two abodes is that they can take advantage of two distinct climates, avoiding harsh winters and interminable summers

By living in two places, Casey says, many retirees have ?the best of both worlds.? They can choose a primary setting near family and a secondary one that satisfies their desire for intellectual stimulation, perhaps in a college town where they can enjoy classes, lectures and cultural events.

For instance, Casey cites low-cost courses available to seniors on many campuses through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes, www.osherfoundation.org Buying a home near a college town offering such classes can enrich retirement.

Obviously, not all retirees are suited to living in two homes. Some prefer a sedentary life with little travel involved. But many others thrive on a dual-town lifestyle, Casey says.

?Living in two places can be exciting. The change of going back and forth is stimulating. And that?s good for a lot of people,? she says

Startups: Time For Another One-Sentence Pitch Competition With The Founder Institute

adeo ressiLast December, TechCrunch worked with Adeo Ressi from The Founder Institute to host a competition for one-sentence pitches. It's been a few months ? so we're doing it again. Distilling your startup idea into a single sentence can be a big challenge, but it's crucial for communicating what you're doing to the outside world. (While there are certainly exceptions, I've found that it's a big warning sign when founders can't succinctly communicate what they do.) Here's the basic formula: "?My company, _(insert name of company)_, is developing _(a defined offering)_ to help _(a defined audience)_ _(solve a problem)_ with _(secret sauce)_?.
